DC has delivered many of the greatest comic-book movies, such as The Dark Knight, Wonder Woman, and Christopher Reeve’s Superman. Known for its great comic productions, DC has recently delivered some of the biggest flops with movies like Black Adam, Shazam! Fury of the Gods, and The Flash.
DC’s Consecutive Setbacks Since Dwayne Johnson’s Black Adam
A still from Black Adam
Released in 2022, Black Adam has been highly criticized for everything. From its script, dicey visual effects, and Dwayne Johnson‘s lack of acting range. The film also falls short as a DC Comics adaptation. It didn’t do well in theaters earning $400 million globally against a $195 million budget — which doesn’t count marketing and other expenses. The movie had issues, with $70 million (additional) spent on reshoots after bad early screenings.
Even Shazam! Fury of the Gods didn’t do well as expected. The sequel made just $133.4 million at the box office, which makes the new lowest earnings for any movie in the DC Cinematic Universe. In addition, the DCU’s latest movie, The Flash (released on 15 June), joins an unfortunate list of the biggest flops and box office bombs in Hollywood film history.
Now, there’s a lot of anticipation for Blue Beetle. The movie is well-liked by fans because it is DC’s initial Latino superhero and the first character in the DCU led by James Gunn.
Can DC Sustain its Winning Streak with Xolo Maridueña’s Blue Beetle?
Xolo Maridueña as Blue Beetle
After years of setbacks, rewrites, and hype from fans of the character, Xolo Maridueña‘s Blue Beetle was released yesterday. Blue Beetle cost $125 million and is the third of four DC films to open theatrically in 2023.
Due to the current SAG strike, the actors from Blue Beetle couldn’t promote their movies on talk shows or in the media. As a result, there’s no splashy Hollywood premiere of the movie. Despite this, it looks like Blue Beetle might not do exceptionally well in the arena as it is predicted only to make around $25 to $32 million during its opening weekend.
After Blue Beetle, next up on DC is Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom (release on 20 December 2023), and rumors aren’t speaking favorably about how good it might turn out to be.
The future of DC can’t be predicted at this moment. It’s concerning because the consistently lower quality of DC films is a worrisome factor. Plus, there’s a general sense of too many movies flooding the market, which no longer feel like special event films.
Blue Beetle is now playing in theaters worldwide.
