Shot to fame with her role in Dawson’s Creek as Joey Potter, Katie Holmes has had a career filled with one splendid movie after another. Although initially cast to portray what people call a sexy young thing, Holmes did her utmost best to turn the tables on that role.

From going as far as taking her friend to photoshoots to make sure they did not make the photos for the role to be extremely racy, to adding her own understanding of dimensional depth to the character, she served the audience a performance that is still as relevant as it was during its release in 1998.

After that, she never had to look back. Known to always portray some of the most multifaceted women on screen, Tom Cruise’s ex-wife maintained her one rule that she wanted to establish in her career vehemently.

Even though their high profile and highly publicized divorce became the talk of the town with numerous rumors and theories going around, something she never publicly commented on, this is something she never compromised on. As such, after over a decade of their divorce, and a longer list of iconic roles in her bag, she remains to be one of the best actresses Hollywood has ever produced.

Katie Holmes’ success after Dawson’s Creek

Katie Holmes has spoken numerous times about how much she enjoyed playing Joey Potter. According to her, she always wanted to be an actress above all things. As such, she did everything she could do to refrain from getting typecast as a “sexy young thing,” she added, “I am not sexy.”

Other than that, she has only ever had good things to say about her role as she could relate to her character a lot recalling back to her own teenage days. She explained, “I felt like, as a teenager, I had so many different feelings, trying to go from being a girl to a woman.”

Fortunately for her, the show’s creator Kevin Williamson did amazing to put those feelings into words, and so for her playing, that role was like, “‘Oh, that’s what that means. Oh, I get that.’ I loved doing it.” However, that was not her only iconic role to date.

The Batman Begins star, went on to create a legacy of one stellar performance after another that ended up making the industry that much richer for their existence. Right after Dawson’s Creek, the actress appeared in Go in 1999, where after a drug deal goes completely haywire, she gets offered up as collateral by her own friend Ronna.

The heart-pumping thriller Phone Booth in 2002, set her mark in a way that is still fresh in the audience’s hearts. After that Pieces of April in 2003, Batman Begins in 2005, Mad Money in 2008, and Touched with Fire where she portrays the character of a bipolar poet engrossed in a blooming relationship with another fellow bipolar poet she meets in the psych ward, the financial crisis drama movie All We Had, along with a bunch of chilling horror flicks like, Don’t be Afraid of the Dark made her create a legacy with one pivotal role after another.

And above all, helped her to really take her career where she always wanted to take it.

Why did Tom Cruise-Katie Holmes Divorce Happen

Holmes’s life, though, did take a sudden turn in 2011 when the sudden news of her and Tom Cruise broke. Allegedly known to be extremely happy together, Holmes reportedly blindsided Cruise by filing for divorce. Although none of the parties ever came out to clarify what really went on, people started to gossip about how Tom Cruise’s association with Scientology could have played a big part. Cruise himself, years later kind of let it slip in an interview, that his religion was in fact, a great factor in their eventual split.

Reportedly, Holmes wanted to do everything that would enable her to keep herself and their daughter out of the reaches of Scientology. As a result, even after a decade of their split, none of them has ever confirmed anything with surety.

Allegedly, Tom Cruise’s ties to Scientology are the reason behind his estrangement from his daughter Suri Cruise, as the people who leave the religion are known as “enemies”, and every measure gets taken to separate them from the practicing members.

It was also reported that Holmes apparently signed a divorce clause for their split which would force her to not date “publicly” for the first five years after their divorce, and in turn, would give her access to hefty alimony. Well, whatever the case, both Holmes and Cruise happen to be doing amazing in their careers, especially with rumors of Suri Cruise potentially stepping into the world of acting once her studies are over floating around.
