In a time when superhero media was just starting to blow with releases from DC and Marvel, Will Smith suited up for an original Superhero film, Hancock, which also comprised Charlize Theron. Although the movie itself did decent at the box office and was nowhere near the success of the actor’s biggest successes, the film did initially intend towards starting a franchise.

Even though in a time, when the superhero landscape is dominated by DC and Marvel, at least on the big screens, it seems the Mad Max star is still optimistic about the future of Hancock’s Sequel.

Charlize Theron is optimistic about Hancock 2‘s future

Considering that she played an immortal lead in The Old Guard, a somewhat similar character to her Hancock counterpart, Charlize Theron did go on to connect the dots herself. Even though Hancock was originally set to be a franchise launcher, despite its modest success, the sequel to the 2008’s movie never came to fruition. But while reflecting on the possibilities for the sequel, Charlize Theron is still optimistic about its sequel and expressed that she’ll do it in a heartbeat. She said,

“For a while, we [talked about Hancock 2]. I think closer to when the movie came out, but not in recent years, no. We’ll be superheroes with our walkers, you know. And I’ll still go. I’ll still make that movie. I would do it in a heartbeat.”

Despite little to no updates on the state of a sequel to the edgy superhero flick, the creators of the film were once considering crafting a sequel not long after the original, but that plan was eventually scrapped.

Hancock’s director explained why the sequel didn’t move forward

Among the many reasons that resulted in the scrapping of a possible sequel to Hancock, including the bloom of MCU with RDJ’s Iron Man, creative differences also seem to be one of the reasons. Not long after the first movie, director Peter Berg realized that a sequel to the Will Smith-led film wouldn’t move forward anytime soon, due to scheduling conflicts and creative differences. He said,
“To get us all in the same room where we can talk and then agree on anything? You’ll never meet a group of people who will have a harder time agreeing on anything. It’s like the Israeli peace process times a thousand in how tough it is for us all.”

Even though it seemed that there was still some hope left for the sequel, following Will Smith’s slap-gate incident at the Oscars, the future of the project doesn’t appear too bright.
