Australian actress Margot Robbie has been making headlines for a while now, thanks to her portrayal of Barbie in Greta Gerwig’s eponymous movie. It is worth noting that the actress’s run-up to this movie has been quite iconic considering she has starred in movies of various genres such as romance, action, drama, and whatnot.

Margot Robbie’s performance as Harley Quinn in DC’s Suicide Squad stole the hearts of millions of people as the movie enjoyed great critical and commercial success. She has worked alongside numerous A-list actors such as Brad Pitt, Leonardo DiCaprio, Chris Pine, Rachel McAdams, and others. An interesting story about her audition for the Will Smith starrer movie Focus has resurfaced on the internet.

The story of Margot Robbie slapping Leonardo DiCaprio during her audition for The Wolf of Wall Street is widely known due to the actress’ boldness in it. Hilariously, she was still hired to play the character of Naomi Laplagia, Jordan Belfort’s (portrayed by Leonardo DiCaprio) second wife, in the movie which gained her recognition.

As it turns out, Robbie has never been one to hold back when it comes to standing her ground. In an interview with The Independent in 2015, the Babylon actress revealed the unconventional reason for being chosen to portray Will Smith’s love interest in the romantic comedy-drama film Focus.

Although this was not the first time this had happened, it was surprising nonetheless. Margot Robbie told The Independent:
“We started improvising a little bit, Will said something and I called him a d**k,” she recalls. “Apparently when he walked out he said: ‘I like her. I think she’s the right one.’ They were like, ‘you like her because she called you a d**k’. It ended up becoming a running joke in the film.”

It was a great move even on Will Smith’s part since instead of taking offense to Robbie’s words, he insisted that she be cast in the movie. Despite getting mixed reviews from critics, Focus went on to gross $168 million against a production budget of $50 million.

In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, the Once Upon A Time In Hollywood star said that she was there to audition while wearing damp, ripped denim shorts, wet shoes, and no makeup only to find out that Will Smith was running late. Robbie said:

“He [Will] comes in and says, ‘Sorry I’m late, I was coming from Queens.’ And I look at Will and I was like, ‘Yeah? Well, I just came from an island off Croatia and I’m here on time.’”

Despite all that happened, the Babylon actress told The Independent:

“Later the producer Denise [Di Novi] said: ‘We loved you – you came in very fresh-faced in ripped shorts.’ That wasn’t a strategic wardrobe choice. That was because I had literally no other options at the time!”

The struggle Margot Robbie went through to audition for her role in Focus is pretty unbeatable as far as job interviews are concerned. The actress recounted that she was on a holiday in Croatia with her younger brother Cameron Robbie when her agent let her know that she had to get on a flight soon if she wanted to be on time for the audition. She had to get on two flights and had lost all her luggage by the time she reached New York.
