Emma Stone jokingly branded her close pal Taylor Swift an ‘a**hole’ for giving her a standing ovation despite missing out on her own Golden Globe.

The 35-year-old actress, who won Best Performance by a Female Actor in a Motion Picture for her role in period fantasy Poor Things, took aim at the Love Story singer, 34, backstage when she was asked what it was like to have the superstar cheer on her success.

Emma made the quip in the press room where she was asked: ‘When you won, Taylor Swift gave you a huge applause. What are your thoughts on her cheering your win?’

She replied: ‘What an a**hole, am I right?’

‘I’ve known her for almost 20 years, I was very happy she was there,’ she continued. ‘She was also nominated tonight, which was wonderful.’

But returning to her playful nature, Emma joked: ‘What an a**hole!’

The mischievous comments tickled fans, with may praising Emma, who was roasted by viewers for her ‘heinous’ attempt at an Australian accent during her acceptance speech.

One simply wrote: ‘Protect her at all costs.’

Another said: ‘I love seeing women supporting women, friends supporting friends and people supporting people, but why not ask Emma about the work she does instead?’

A third criticized the line of questioning, posting: ‘There’s a time and place to fangirl over Taylor Swift, and it’s called Twitter.’

Of course, Emma and Taylor’s friendship dates back to 2008 when they reportedly met at the Young Hollywood Awards when they were both still teenagers.

At the time, Emma had already been in the hit comedy Superbad (2007) and was quickly on her way to the A-list.

She even brought Taylor as her date to the 2010 premiere of her movie, Easy A.

Emma snagged her second Golden Globe award on Sunday night for her role in Tony McNamara’s movie Poor Things, which marks their third collaboration, following 2018’s The Favourite and Cruella in 2021.

She beat fellow nominees Alma Pöysti for Fallen Leaves, Fantasia Barrino for The Color Purple, Jennifer Lawrence for No Hard Feelings, Margot Robbie for Barbie, and Natalie Portman for May December.

Emma plays Bella Baxter/Victoria Blessington, a woman brought back to life by the brilliant and unorthodox scientist Dr. Godwin Baxter, played by Willem Dafoe.

Taylor’s The Eras concert movie lost out to Barbie in the new Cinematic and Box Office Achievement category.

Greta Gerwig’s hit movie about the famous Mattel doll also beat out Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, John Wick: Chapter 4, Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part 1, Oppenheimer, Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse and The Super Mario Bros. Movie.

Besides not winning in her category, Taylor looked distinctly unimpressed after she became the butt of one of Golden Globes’ host Jo Koy’s gags.

The singer appeared to be enjoying a glass of champagne before the comedian, 52, quipped about her romance with Travis Kelce, 34.

He said: ‘Welcome back. As you know, we came on after a football doubleheader.

‘The big difference between the Golden Globes and the NFL – on the Golden Globes fewer camera shots of Taylor Swift.’

The camera then cut to a shot of a stoic Taylor sipping on her drink as she failed to crack a smile.
