Oscar-winning actress Emma Stone may have openly declared her love for working on the 2018 black comedy (for the actress didn’t have to tweak the script at all), but Stone did share her discomfort with the corset she had to wear for Abigail’s part. The La La Land actress had to smell menthol as she struggled to breathe in her first corset role.
Emma Stone’s Historically Accurate Corset Was Organ-Shifting!
The Favourite (2018) was Emma Stone‘s first “corset role” as she played Abigail Hill. The actress, who has remained vocal about her love for working in the black comedy, did open up about how wearing the “historically accurate costume” actually shifted her organs.
Emma Stone as Abigail in The Favourite (2018)
During an appearance on The Graham Norton Show, she praised costume designer Sandy Powell but said:
“It’s historically accurate, but I couldn’t f—ing breathe. I would smell menthol and it sort of made me think that I was in a wide open space,” then be back to not breathing for the first month of filming.”
“After about a month, my organs shifted because they have to. It was only temporary, but it was gross.”
She further narrated that the bottom half of her stomach (joking she isn’t a doctor), whatever is in there, “went down that way” while her ribs stayed up. Moreover, Stone couldn’t sit so she had to “lean against the couch at a strange angle.” Thankfully, her organs returned to normal.
Eddie Redmayne, who was also present on the show, expressed that he’s done a lot of corset work, including a production of Shakespeare’s Twelfth Night. Admitting that he had worn corsets, Redmayne expressed his sympathy for the actress.
The Favourite grossed $95.9 million at the worldwide box office against its $15 million budget, This film was listed as one of the top ten films of 2018 by the American Film Institute.
Emma Stone’s Abigail Belonged To The 18th Century
Despite being one of the biggest stars with an Oscar, Stone has to undergo an audition for this role. During a previous interview, the movie’s director explained the reason:
“It was making sure that we would be able to work creatively free without the accent being a hindrance in the way that we wanted to work.”
Emma Stone (Abigail) and Olivia Colman (Queen Anne) in The Favourite (2018)
Emma Stone, on the other hand, couldn’t stop praising the script. She revealed that the script was written for the screen that “features three women” (including Queen Anne, played by Olivia Colman) who are “emotionally complex, raw, fragile, strong and funny,” all at the same time.
The 2018 period black comedy won numerous accolades ten British Independent Fim Awards, eight European Film Awards, and seven BAFTA awards. Colman won an Oscar for her role as Queen Anne.
The Favourite can be rented or purchased on Vudu.
