Even the biggest stars can get their just desserts from karma in the cutthroat world of Hollywood. This is the case with Angelina Jolie, the stunning and talented actress with worldwide acclaim. Jolie has been left reeling by recent events that have revealed a string of lost opportunities and disappointments. Karma appears to have caught up with the once-unstoppable Jolie, who has lost out on a high-stakes thriller to Tom Cruise and been surpassed by Sandra Bullock in Netflix’s most-watched film.

What started it all was the high-stakes espionage thriller Salt. Even Tom Cruise himself was initially intrigued by the film. But as luck would have it, Angelina Jolie got the starring role. This unexpected turn of events was the first time Jolie noticed karma at work.

Angelina Jolie’s star continued to rise after Salt, and she was eventually considered for the lead role in a remake of the highly regarded film Unforgiven. The director of the Mission: Impossible films was attached to the project, adding prestige.

The director decided to go in a different direction with the thriller Jack Reacher, starring Tom Cruise. Angelina Jolie’s hopes of working with the talented director were dashed when an unexpected turn of events significantly slowed down production of the Unforgiven reboot. The delay was not just an inconvenience; it would permanently change the course of the project.

Gravity: Another Loss to Sandra Bullock

The disappointment of missing out on The Unforgivable was compounded when Angelina Jolie was passed over to star in the highly acclaimed film Gravity. Sandra Bullock got the part that should have gone to her. This defeat cemented Bullock’s rising star power, and Jolie was left to consider the repercussions of her actions.

Moving forward to 2021, we see the premiere of The Unforgivable, a drama film starring Sandra Bullock and directed by Nora Fingscheidt. The film is based on the British miniseries of the same name from 2009 and follows a woman as she travels to find her estranged sister after she is released from prison after serving 20 years for murder.

Bullock’s performance was praised by many, but the film itself was met with mixed reviews. Netflix’s heavy investment in the film was on display during its release on Netflix on November 25, 2021.  The Unforgivable quickly became one of Netflix’s most-watched movies after its release.

Jolie has seen the results of her decisions firsthand, from losing a major thriller to Sandra Bullock to missing out on major projects like The Unforgivable and Gravity. As the actress considers her Hollywood misfortunes, the mysterious nature of karma becomes clear.
