Patrick Mahomes recently led the Kansas City Chiefs to their third Super Bowl championship, since he assumed the role of starting QB. Mahomes’ stellar performance also earned him the coveted Super Bowl LVIII MVP title, marking the third time he clinched the prestigious award. His stellar performances put him high on the list of QBs in the NFL, but Johnny Menzel believes Mahomes isn’t the best QB in Texas high school history.
Mahomes attended Whitehouse High School in Texas and needed only two years to prove his mettle as he cemented his legacy in the NFL.
There’s a QB who’s much better than Patrick Mahomes
Speaking on the “Club Shay Shay,” podcast Johnny Manziel claimed that Kyler Murray is the best QB in Texas high school football history. “If you know anything about Texas High School football, I would say (Kyler Murray’s) resume and what he did makes him hands down the best Texas high school football player to ever play,” Manziel said.
Manziel emphasized the unparalleled accomplishments and accolades that Murray amassed during his time at Allen High School. Murray’s tenure saw him guide the team to three straight state championships, maintaining a flawless 42-0 record as the team’s starting QB. He threw for 8,384 yards and 100 touchdowns while also rushing for 2,826 yards and 42 touchdowns. This betters what Mahomes achieved during his high school tenure.
At Whitehouse High School Mahomes threw for 8,458 yards and 96 touchdowns, along with 1,198 rushing yards and 21 touchdowns. Murray also had a better college football career, winning a Heisman Trophy, and was picked by the Arizona Cardinals as the first overall pick in the NFL Draft in 2019.
Despite Murray’s extraordinary success at the high school level, his transition to the NFL has not yielded the same level of dominance. In contrast, Patrick Mahomes may not boast the same sterling high school credentials as Murray, but he has witnessed a meteoric rise in the NFL. But it all could’ve been very different for him.
There was always the chance that he might have chosen a different route entirely and followed his father’s footsteps.
Mahomes a baseball star?
Before Mahomes emerged as a football sensation, the prevailing assumption in Texas was that he would follow in his father’s footsteps and pursue a career in baseball. His father, Pat Mahomes Sr., had enjoyed a successful tenure as a relief pitcher in MLB from 1992 to 2003. However, his son’s trajectory took a different turn when he secured the starting QB position in the fall of 2012.
