The two first met in the early ’90s when they were cast in the sixth season of Disney Channel’s The All-New Mickey Mouse Club, along with Spears and Ryan Gosling. The four were picked out from an audition for “salt of the earth, bread and butter all-American kids.” They made an exemption for Gosling who’s Canadian. Producer Sarah Elgart revealed that though they “weren’t really agent and Hollywood savvy,” they had natural talents that made them the big stars they are now. MMC alum, Nikki DeLoach even recalled that watching the young Xtina sing was “almost like witnessing something divine.”

As for Justin, Elgart said that he and Spears both had “a natural talent and an honesty” when it comes to dancing. “They both worked really hard, and they seemed to appreciate the moment,” she said, noting that Gosling, on the other hand, “wasn’t much of a singer or a dancer but he was a kind of a magic talent on the screen. He was very funny.” The La La Land star later said it himself—he “wasn’t nearly as talented as some of the other kids,” which is why Elgart thinks “he surprised everyone the most in terms of going on to become this Oscar [nominated] thespian.”

Speaking about romance between the cast members, Mouseketeer Tony Lucca admitted that there “was a lot of young love” in the Club. “But I think there were also a lot of just friendships,” he explained. “You know, really bona fide great platonic friendships that have sustained to this day.”

She then addressed the love triangle that may have started her long-rumored feud with Spears. “There was me and Britney — well now, you know — there was a thing back then,” she recounted. She added that the Baby One More Time singer must “be regretting” dating Timberlake because “I know Ryan [Gosling] pretty much…he did have a crush on Britney,” said Aguilera.
