Patrick Mahomes’ dad has been arrested for driving while intoxicated – just a week before his son’s fourth Super Bowl appearance.

The Kansas City Chiefs quarterback’s father, 53, was arrested by the Tyler Police Department on at least his third DWI on Saturday night in Texas.

He is being held on a $10,000 bond. Mahomes Sr., who is a 6’4 former professional baseball pitcher, is currently in custody at the Smith County Jail.

The Chiefs – and his NFL legend son – are currently gearing up for their Super Bowl showdown against the San Francisco 49ers on February 11 in Las Vegas.

Mahomes Sr. has been arrested a total of six times for driving while intoxicated, according to public booking records – twice in 2012, twice in 2018, once in 2019, and now once in 2024.

On his DWI charge in 2018, he pleaded guilty and was sentenced to 40 days in county jail on weekends during 2019 and 2020.

After two DWI convictions in Texas, the third DWI offense is classed as a third degree felony. The maximum fine is $10,000, and the maximum prison sentence is 10 years in a Texas Department of Criminal Justice penitentiary.

It is unclear as of Sunday afternoon if Mahomes Sr. has posted bond.

This is not the Mahomes family’s first run in with the law. The Chiefs quarterback’s younger brother Jackson was arrested on a warrant for aggravated sexual battery and booked into a Kansas jail in 2023.

In January this year, three felony counts of aggravated sexual battery were dropped. A fourth charge — misdemeanor battery — remains, and Jackson Mahomes pleaded not guilty to that charge.

Jackson Mahomes’ attorney, Brandan Davies, said in a statement that his client ‘has done nothing wrong. We had full confidence that the truth of the matter would ultimately be revealed.’

The original charges accused Jackson Mahomes, a 23-year-old social media influencer, of crimes that occurred February 25 at Aspens Restaurant and Lounge in Overland Park, Kansas, a suburb of Kansas City.

Investigators said Mahomes shoved a waiter who tried to come into a room where he was with the restaurant’s owner, Aspen Vaughn.

After the waiter left, Mahomes grabbed Vaughn by the throat and forcefully kissed her three different times without her consent, prosecutors alleged.

Just days before his arrest, Mahomes Sr. came to the defense of his quarterback son after he faced online criticism for his physique.

‘He’s at the gym all the time,’ the former MLB pitcher, who had stints on the New York Mets and Pittsburgh Pirates among other teams, told CNN. ‘He works out three times a week.

‘He’s just unfortunate he got that from me. That’s in his DNA. We don’t get the muscles like DK Metcalf and some of the guys that are built like rocks and statues.

‘We just got this natural dad bod, but hey, we representing.’

When asked his thoughts on the excitement around the Chiefs and Taylor Swift, with whom he shared a suite once with, ahead of Super Bowl LVIII in Las Vegas next week, Mahomes Sr. said: ‘Well, it’s exciting.

‘I mean Taylor has always been very, very nice and pleasant to me.

‘I actually was in the box with her only one time. I’ve went over and seen her after games and stuff like that.

‘But, she’s always been pleasant. But, the buzz around the Chiefs is real, man. It’s real. I mean anytime you can get back to the Super Bowl as many times as they’ve had… and it’s not just Patrick, it’s the whole team, you know?

‘Every sporting team…their goal is to get to that final game and they’ve been fortunate enough to get back now four times and hopefully we can finish it off right this time.’

And this week Patrick Mahomes’ father said he thinks it is too early to consider his son the greatest quarterback of all time.

Although he refuses to crown his junior as the GOAT at this point, he believes that the Chiefs superstar is on the right path towards achieving such status.

‘That’s still to be determined,’ Pat said. ‘He still has a ways to go. I have mad respect for Tom Brady and grew up as a Joe Montana fan.

‘[Patrick] is on the right trajectory, but right now, I would still say those guys are better.’
