The Olympics are still ongoing, but Luana Alonso, a Paraguayan swimmer, won’t be there to watch it in person due to her behavior.
Based on her social media followers, the 20-year-old is easily one of the more popular faces in Paris. She has stolen the hearts of thousands before, during, and eventually after the Paris Olympics.
Luana Alonso’s Paris Olympics ended badly after she was kicked out of the Olympic Village of Paris 2024 for “creating an inappropriate environment.”
The Olympian reportedly sneaked out of the village to visit Disneyland in Paris instead of staying back to support her teammates.
Paraguayan Olympic Committee boss Larissa Schaerer said in a statement, “Her presence is creating an inappropriate atmosphere within Team Paraguay.”
“We thank her for proceeding as instructed, as it was of her own free will that she did not spend the night in the Athletes’ Village,” Schaerer added.
Alonso didn’t say anything about being kicked out until Monday, when she finally broke her silence.
She’s happily returning to the United States and her college life at SMU in the suburbs of Dallas, Texas.
She took to her Instagram story and posted “Pony up” and a picture of the statued ponies outside her school’s campus to let everyone know she had made it home.
Luana Alonso Retired From Swimming At The Paris Olympics
After retiring from the sport, Luana Alonso is unlikely ever to represent her country again. On July 27th, she failed to advance out of her heat and into the women’s 100m butterfly semifinals.
Alonso reportedly stayed in the Olympic Village despite announcing her retirement from the sport.
From there, she would state her intention to hang up her leotard for good.
“it’s official! I’m retiring from swimming, thank you all so much for your support!” Alonso wrote on Instagram after the event. “Sorry Paraguay. I just have to say thank you!”
“Swimming: thank you for allowing me to dream, you taught me to fight, to try, perseverance, sacrifice, discipline and many more things,” she wrote, including a bunch of photos of her competing at the Paris Olympics.
“I gave you part of my life and I wouldn’t change that for anything in the world because I lived the best experiences of my life, you gave me thousands of joys, friends from other countries that I will always carry in my heart, unique opportunities. It’s not goodbye, it’s see you soon.”
Alonso spent a season at Virginia Tech before transferring to SMU.
