Oppenheimer contained two intimate moments involving the characters played by Cillian Murphy and Florence Pugh.

These scenes garnered a lot of attention prior to the movie’s release, as it was the first time Christopher Nolan had filmed such content. However, it appears that both scenes were altered for the Indian audience when the film premiered on July 21.

Oppenheimer: Moviegoers shocked as Florence Pugh gets covered in black dress during intimate scene

Although the initial scene seemed to end abruptly due to the blurring of Florence Pugh’s bare back, only a few observant viewers noticed the significant alteration made in the subsequent scene. Some eagle-eyed fans spotted that Florence was depicted nude but covered by a “black dress.” Speculation suggests that the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) may have requested this change, but no official confirmation or statement has been released.

Oppenheimer is facing criticism in India for featuring a sex scene that includes the Bhagavad Gita. Uday Mahurkar, representing the Save Culture Save India Foundation, has issued a statement expressing that the scene has offended religious sentiments and called on the I&B ministry to take action. The statement claims that the movie contains scenes that attack Hinduism, specifically citing a scene in which a woman makes a man read the Bhagwad Geeta aloud during sexual intercourse.

The statement further read, “The Foundation urges, on behalf of the public of this nation and timeless tradition of lives being transformed by revered Geeta, the I & B Ministry to do all that is needed to uphold dignity of the revered holy book of the Hindus, punish those involved and setting processes in place that such things do not happen in future.”

Released on July 21, Oppenheimer is based on the Pulitzer Prize–winning biography American Prometheus: The Triumph and Tragedy of J. Robert Oppenheimer. The film is directed, Written and produced by Christopher Nolan. It stars Cillian Murphy in the titular character and features a supporting ensemble cast that includes Emily Blunt, Matt Damon, Robert Downey Jr., Florence Pugh, Josh Hartnett, Casey Affleck, Rami Malek, and Kenneth Branagh.
