Cardi B recently addressed the issue of her Blackness and her use of the n-word on Instagram, following a comparison made between her and Gina Rodriguez. The controversy arose when Gina, known for her role in the TV show Jane The Virgin, shared an Instagram story of herself singing along to the Fugees’ song “Ready Or Not”.

However, instead of censoring herself, Gina sang the full n-word in the lyrics which led to a backlash from upset followers. This sparked a Twitter conversation about the appropriateness of using the n-word and who has the right to use it.

Clap back: In response to a tweet that alleged that Cardi never ‘acts like a [black woman] until its time to be a [black woman],’ the Please Me hitmaker responded ‘How do you act like a black woman ? How do black women act?’

On the defense: In another tweet, the rapper continued her defense by vocalizing how difficult its been to navigate her race and her place in the world, explaining that she got tired of arguing about it

In her response, the rapper defended herself against the criticism and expressed the challenges she has faced in navigating her race and her role in society. She expressed frustration with constantly having to argue about her racial identity.

The controversy arose from users questioning her use of a certain word, arguing that if Cardi, who comes from Dominican and Trinidadian heritage and identifies as Black, can say it, then so can Rodriguez.

In reply to a tweet alleging that she only “acts like a black woman” when it is convenient, Cardi asked how one should act as a black woman and questioned the stereotypes associated with black women. She further emphasized the difficulties she has encountered in embracing her racial identity and avoiding constant arguments about it.

She shared an old video where she spoke about loving herself as a Black woman but noted that people would question her blackness due to her ability to speak Spanish, resulting in her now identifying as “Carribean.”
