Eddie Murphy returned to the set to shoot new scenes for Beverly Hills Cop: Axel F with Joseph Gordon Levitt.

Filming started back in August 2022 and wrapped in early 2023, so it’s possible that the film is undergoing reshoots or the actors are filming promotional material.

Netflix released the first trailer for the sequel last month, indicating it would be released sometime this summer, though a specific date has yet to be announced.

Murphy was wearing a new Detroit Lions jacket, similar to the one his character Axel Foley has worn throughout the hit film franchise.

He was seen leaning against a cherry red BMW in one snap, while rocking light blue jeans and white Adidas sneakers.

Another shot showed him stepping into a van, wearing the same pants and sneakers but with a navy blue coat and a red shirt.

His co-star Joseph Gordon-Levitt was spotted with a white striped dress shirt and tie under a black fur-lined coat.

There’s no indication if these potenial reshoots may affect the proposed Summer 2024 release date at this time.

A fourth Beverly Hills Cop movie has been bandied about for decades, with several writers and directors coming and going.

The first film celebrates its 40th anniversary in December, which followed Detroit detective Axel Foley (Murphy) from Detroit to Beverly Hills to solve his best friend’s murder.

The original was an enormous success, becoming the highest-grossing movie of 1984 with $234.7 million from a $13 million budget, adding another $81.6 million from foreign markets for $316.3 million worldwide.

When adjusted for inflation would equate to a $693.6 million movie today, higher than last year’s highest-grossing movie, Barbie ($636.2 million).

The first Beverly Hills Cop also held the record as the highest-grossing R-rated movie of all time with $234.7 million for nearly two decades, until The Matrix Reloaded beat it in 2003.

The successful first entry spawned the 1987 sequel Beverly Hills Cop II, which took in a lesser $153.6 million domestic but an improved $146.3 million in foreign markets for $299.9 million worldwide.

The third film – 1994’s Beverly Hills Cop III – floundered at the box office with $42.6 million domestic and $76.5 million foreign for $119.2 million worldwide from a $50 million budget.

Throughout the late 1990s and early 2000s there were several incarnations of the project, with Brett Ratner (Tower Heist) attached to direct at one point.

Then in 2011, the project shifted from a movie sequel to a CBS TV series, focusing on Axel Foley’s son Aaron (Brandon T. Jackson), a rookie cop in the Beverly Hills Police Department.

Murphy was set to executive produce and make an appearance as Axel, and while a pilot episode was shot, CBS ultimately passed on bringing it to series.

Ratner returned to direct again in late 2013, though that never made it to production, nor did another version with directors Adil El Arbi and Bilall Fallah (Bad Boys For Life).

While they were attached for six years, El Arbi and Fallah were replaced by Mark Molloy in April 2022, with filming finally getting under way in August 2022.
