Nearly four decades after Beverly Hills Cop propelled Eddie Murphy to mega stardom, the actor is set to reprise his role as Detective Axel Foley in a brand new instalment to the beloved series.
Beverly Hills Cop: Axel F is set to premiere on Netflix next year, and it will feature a slew of the original stars returning as the characters that we know and love – like Eddie, Judge Reinhold, and John Ashton – as well as an exciting array of new cast members including Taylour Paige, Joseph Gordon-Levitt, and Kevin Bacon.
The original movie came out in 1984 and follows a rebellious cop named Axel.
He secretly sets out on a mission to figure out who murdered his childhood friend, despite his boss telling him he wasn’t allowed to pursue the investigation.
The action comedy was immensely successful.
It raked in $234 million at the US box office, making it the highest-grossing film of that year, and inspiring two (soon to be three) more flicks.
It helped transform Eddie, a then-budding star, who was more known for his comedy sketches on Saturday Night Live than his acting, into a major Hollywood figure.
But Eddie wasn’t the only one to benefit from the franchise’s popularity.
It also launched massive careers for many of his costars.
They may not have been as prolific as the Dr. Dolittle star, but still racked up their own list of impressive achievements in the years that followed.
As the world gears up for the upcoming fourth installment of the Beverly Hills Cop series, FEMAIL has raised the curtain on the lives of the main stars from the original movie – and uncovered what they’re all doing now.
From the movie and TV roles they landed afterwards and their other endeavors to a glimpse into their love lives and scandals, here’s everything the cast of Beverly Hills Cop has been up to since it came out 39 years ago.
Eddie Murphy played Detective Axel Foley
Eddie, 62, starred as Detective Axel Foley in Beverly Hills Cop, which was his first solo leading role.
The film’s immense popularity launched the actor into major stardom, and he went on to become one of the biggest faces in Hollywood.
Some of his best known acting credits include the martial arts comedy The Golden Child, Coming To America, crime comedy Harlem Nights (which he also directed), The Nutty Professor, Dr. Dolittle, and Bowfinger, the movie adaptation of the musical Dreamgirls (which earned him an Oscar nomination and a Golden Globe for Best Supporting Actor), Tower Heist (which also starred Ben Stiller and Matthew Broderick), the biographical film Dolemite Is My Name, and the rom-com You People.
He’s also a successful voice actor, and has portrayed a series of animated characters including Mushu in Disney’s Mulan and Donkey in the Shrek franchise.
In addition, Eddie has also launched a massive music career, releasing three albums over the years.
As for his personal life, Eddie was married twice and has welcomed 10 children with five different women.
He welcomed his first son, Eric, in 1989 with then-girlfriend Paulette McNeely, followed by his second, Christian, in 1990 with then-girlfriend Tamara Hood.
He was married to model Nicole Mitchell Murphy from 1993 to 2005, and together, they had five children: daughters Bria, Shayne, Zola, and Bella, and a son named Miles.
He was briefly linked to Spice Girl Mel B after that, and she had his fifth daughter, Angel, in 2007.
In 2008, Eddie tied the knot with film producer Tracey Edmonds – but they split only 14 days later.
After that, the star started dating Australian model Paige Butcher, 44, and they welcomed a little girl named Izzy in 2016, followed by a baby boy named Max in 2018. He and Paige got engaged in 2018.
Lisa Eilbacher played Jeanette ‘Jenny’ Summers
Lisa Eilbacher, 67, played Jeanette ‘Jenny’ Summers in the action comedy film, Axel’s childhood pal who comes back into his life to help him to solve the murder of their mutual friend.
And it was just the beginning for her. Afterwards, Lisa went on to star in the miniseries The Winds Of War, followed by the ABC comedy drama show Me And Mom.
She also appeared in the two-part TV movie Monte Carlo, alongside Joan Collins and George Hamilton, the 1988 action comedy Never Say Die, the sci-fi horror flick Leviathan, the NBC drama Midnight Caller, and the Pierce Brosnan-led action film Live Wire.
Her last role was in 1995, and it’s unclear what the actress has been up to since then. She married director Bradford May in 1988.
Steven Berkoff played Victor Maitland
Steven Berkoff, 86, starred as Victor Maitland in Beverly Hills Cop, a corrupt art dealer and Jenny’s boss, who has suspicious ties to the victim.
His career continued to soar afterwards, and since the flick premiered, Steven has starred in an impressive list of movies, TV series, and Broadway shows.
His biggest films include Revolution (alongside Al Pacino and Donald Sutherland), Prince’s movie Under The Cherry Moon, the crime drama The Krays, Cindy Crawford-lead flick Fair Game, The Tourist (with Johnny Depp and Angelina Jolie), The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo, and the biographical history drama Decline Of An Empire.
He’s also a successful playwright, theater director, stage actor, and author. He released a memoir in 2014, called Bad Guy! Journal Of A Hollywood Turkey and a novel a year later, entitled Sod The Bitches.
He was married twice in the ’70s before he starred in Beverly Hills Cop. He is a father of two, and welcomed a daughter with each of his ex-wives: Mylea and Sarah.
He went on to wed his Decadence costar Clara Fischer, and they now live a quiet life in London together.
Judge Reinhold played Detective William ‘Billy’ Rosewood
Judge, 66, portrayed Detective William ‘Billy’ Rosewood, one of the police officers assigned to follow Alex, in the action film.
Following its success, Judge did not slow down, landing starring roles in the movies Roadhouse 66 (which also starred Willem Dafoe), the black comedy film Head Office, and Off Beat in quick succession.
He then acted in the 1986 film Ruthless People (alongside Danny DeVito and Bette Midler), the ensemble comedy Daddy’s Dyin’…Who’s Got The Will?, and Zandalee with Nicolas Cage.
Arguably his most notable role came in 1994 when he starred in the beloved Christmas flick The Santa Clause as Dr. Neal Miller, which he reprised for The Santa Clause 2 and The Santa Clause 3: The Escape Clause.
Judge also starred as a guy named Aaron, who develops an obsession with Jerry’s parents, in an episode of Seinfeld, which earned him an Emmy nomination.
His later credits include Steve Spielberg’s Into The West, two of the films from the Beethoven franchise, and the 2008 political satire Swing Vote.
He married actress Carrie Frazier in 1985, but they split a year later. He then wed musician Amy Miller in 2000.
He and Amy welcomed a daughter together, named Haley, in 2013, and the family reside in Little Rock, Arkansas together.
Judge had a run-in with the law back in 2016 when he was arrested at an airport in Dallas for disorderly conduct.
It was reported at the time that he had refused to let TSA do a pat-down during a regular security check.
In a statement afterwards, he said he was ’embarrassed’ by his behavior. He ultimately plead no contest and the charges were dropped after he ‘stayed out of trouble for 90 days,’ per the Dallas Morning News.
John Ashton played Sergeant John Taggart
John, 75, was seen as Sergeant John Taggart in Beverly Hills Cop, the other law enforcement official assigned to go after Axel.
After that, the roles came pouring in. He acted in John Hughes’ Some Kind of Wonderful and She’s Having A Baby (the latter of which also starred Kevin Bacon), the action comedy Midnight Run (with Robert De Niro), the Christmas flick Trapped In Paradise, Meet The Deedles, the psychological thriller Instinct, and the 2007 drama Gone Baby Gone (which was directed by Ben Affleck).
He was married and divorced twice: first, to a woman named Victoria Marie Runn from 1968 to 1970, and second, to someone named Bridget Baker-Ashton from 1976 until 2001.
He has two kids, one from each of his past marriages. He resides in Fort Collins, Colorado.
Ronny Cox played Lieutenant Andrew Bogomil
Ronny Cox, 85, starred as Lieutenant Andrew Bogomil in the 1984 flick – the man in charge who assigned John and Billy to tail Axel.
He continued to act afterwards, appearing in the sci-fi film RoboCop, the crime series Murder, She Wrote, Total Recall (alongside Arnold Schwarzenegger), the thriller Murder At 1600, Marvel superhero movie Captain America, the TV movie Perfect Murder, Perfect Town, and the USA series The Starter Wife.
He also had guest appearances in a slew of big shows like Star Trek: The Next Generation, Desperate Housewives, Mr. Sunshine, Dexter, and Nashville.
In addition, he released an autobiography in 2012. In recent years, he has switched his focus to making music, releasing 11 albums and embarking on a slew of tours around the globe.
He was married to his childhood friend, Mary Cox, from 1960 until she died in 2006. They had two sons together.
