On Monday (Feb. 10), 50 made a surprise visit to Queen Radio on Beats 1 and strolled down memory lane with his fellow Jamaica, Queens native.
During their discussion, Nicki asked Fif how come he didn’t sign her when she was garnering so much buzz back in the days in their hometown.
“Because of Fendi,” says 50, referring to Nicki’s former manager Big Fendi who was managing her at the time. “That’s the only reason why I wasn’t saying nothing or checking real hard for her (Nicki) because he was over there.”
For those who don’t know, Big Fendi is credited for discovering Nicki back in the mid-2000s and gave her the rap name Nicki Minaj.
The pair had a bad falling out and Nicki eventually went to famed manager Debra Antney, Waka Flocka Flame’s mother, to manage her career. Last July, Nicki and Big Fendi reconciled their differences on a special episode of Queen Radio.
“Now he’s is a little seasoned,” 50 said about Big Fendi. “He knows how to keep the relationship the right way. Back then, he was being Fendi.”
Nicki concurred and said, “We all matured and I think it’s only going to help our businesses. [Because] we from where we are from [and] we don’t need more bullshit and drama anymore.”
Last Saturday (Feb. 8), Nicki jumped on Twitter to reveal her new rap persona. When a fan asked, “Can we be expecting a new alter-ego this era? Or possibly the return of a fan fave,” Nicki responded, “Queen Sleeze.”
Nicki then explained further about her new second self. “She’s more calm but way deadlier,” she said. “My husband always says he’s more afraid when I talk quiet then when I yell. Lmao. He said that’s how he knows when I’m dead tf serious.”
When later asked to describe the album in four words, Nicki responded, “Queen TF Sleeze.”
In 2020, Nicki Minaj is going to be serious. Get ready.
See 17 Rappers Who Haven’t Put an Album Out in a While That We’d Like to Hear From
50 Cent
50 Cent
50 Cent’s name still ring bells, but it’s been over a decade since he released a platinum album. Since then, he’s focused his efforts more on acting, investing, executive producing and trolling among other things.
His 2014 indie album Animal Ambition felt more like a mixtape than the epic showings we’re accustomed to from Fif. While he’s put out some solid mixtapes in the duration, he consistently pushed his Street King Immortal album to the backburner.
He is presumably still working on the album. We are patiently waiting.
Ab-Soul
Ab-Soul
T.D.E.’s Ab-Soul is the most reclusive rapper in the clique and after releasing and promoting his 2016 album, Do What Thou Wilt, Solo has been laying low.
We were supposed to get the mixtape Longterm 3 between then and now but it never materialized. Now it looks like 2020 will be the year the self-described “Black Lip Pastor” returns.
During a performance at the 2019 Day N Vegas Festival, he concluded his set by telling fans, “New album 2020. We takin’ everything.” Yes, please.
Dr. Dre
Dr. Dre
We waited a whole 16 years to get Dr. Dre’s third album, Compton. That’s two lifetimes in rap terms. Now that the good doc has properly administered the remedy, fans still want another fix.
Will we get it? It’s hard to tell. Many of the same things that hindered the release of Detox are still in play, including Dre’s busy business schedule and perfectionist mentality.
However, he always seems to be in music mode. There are seemingly never-ending whispers of Dre being in the lab and he is reportedly mixing Kanye West’s upcoming album, Jesus Is King 2.
Jay Electronica
Jay Electronica
Jay Electronica blessed us with a fire album in 2007, a classic single in 2009 (“Exhibit C”) and has kept us waiting with bated breath for a new LP for over a decade.
A single here, a guest appearance there is all we’ve received. Not even a Roc Nation deal and the urging of Jay-Z himself has convinced Jay Elec to release his long-awaited LP. Still, we wait.
Childish Gambino
Childish Gambino
Childish Gambino has a lot on his plate these days and fans are hoping there’s at least a side dish of album. In 2016, he stepped outside the box with his critically acclaimed Awaken, My Love! LP.
Then he messed the whole game up in 2018, with the loose single “This Is America,” which won multiple Grammy Awards. While fans were hoping a new album would arrive sooner than later, all we have since then are two more singles.
A new year brings new hope that an album will materialize.
Busta Rhymes
Busta Rhymes
Busta Rhymes has nine albums under his belt but hasn’t put out a solo LP since 2012. That’s double the amount of time since his previous longest album drought— from 2002 to 2006.
Bussa Bus has not been stagnant, however, releasing three mixtapes and helping launch the career of O.T. Genasis, all while teasing his official return. Last February, he announced he was putting the finishing touches on the album with the help of Dr. Dre. We are still waiting on the aftermath.
Lil Dicky
Lil Dicky
Lil Dicky had a big buzz after releasing his debut album, Professional Rapper in 2015. He followed that up by being inducted into the 2016 XXL Freshman class and then released the hit single “Freaky Friday” featuring Chris Brown in 2018.
The world is still waiting on his sophomore album, which has played the background while he’s been working on his new television show, which premieres in March. With the TV series completed, Dicky heads should be getting new music soon.
In January, the rapper revealed he’s working on the LP now. “The good news is, I’ve made a ton of incredible music over these years,” he wrote in an Instagram post.
“Boy oh boy have I evolved and blossomed!! You will hear it and love it and be proud of me, and less annoyed with me. But I gotta finish it and then roll it out right. You only get so many cracks at doing what I’m about to do.”
Lauryn Hill
Lauryn Hill
Lauryn Hill really dropped one of the greatest albums of the 1990s and then said, one is enough.
A whole two-plus decades have passed, and L Boogie seems content touring with the old stuff and not giving into fans’ whims for new material.
That doesn’t mean we aren’t still asking for it. Last year, she put out her first solo single in five years. Her song, “Guarding the Gates,” appeared on Queen & Slim: The Soundtrack. So, maybe, just maybe there’s hope.
Jadakiss
Jadakiss
AHAAA! Jadakiss is a top-shelf lyricist. So, it’s a shame he’s only dropped four solo albums in his 20-plus year career. 2017’s Friday on Elm Street collab with Fabolous was the closest thing the Lox member got to a solo LP since 2015’s Top 5 Dead or Alive.
The “So Raspy” rapper signed a deal with Roc Nation in 2018, and as of press time, we’re still waiting on an announcement about his debut on the house that Hov built.
Fetty Wap
Fetty Wap
Fetty Wap hit the ground running with the 2014 single “Trap Queen” and struck while the iron was hot by releasing his debut album the following year.
The former XXL Freshman has stayed heavy on the mixtape scene but has failed to follow up with a sophomore studio album in the years since due to rumored label issues. Half a decade after his debut, Fetty finally plans to drop his second album King Zoo this spring.
Pharrell
Pharrell
Pharrell is a certified hitmaker and the world needs more of his hits. With only two solo albums to his name, his most recent GIRL LP produced the mega smash “Happy” and the world is better for it.
Chad of The Neptunes recently revealed he and Skateboard P have been in the lab with a number of artists and plan to ramp up production this year. Hopefully that means a new Pharrell album is also in the works as well.
DMX
DMX
For years, DMX has been dealing with issues that are deeper than rap. He went from dropping five albums in five years to three in the last 17. It’s hard to consider his last album, Redemption of the Beast, official as it was reportedly released without his consent.
Last fall, he reunited with Def Jam, inking a new deal with the record company that was his first label home. It’d be dope to see X rise like a grand champion once again following a stint in rehab.
