Paul Scholes has admitted that he is ‘worried to death’ about one Manchester United player after seeing his latest message to fans.

United kick off their season this Saturday when they take on Manchester City in the Community Shield.

Their Premier League season then gets underway six days later, with Fulham the first visitors to Old Trafford on August 16.

It has been a reasonably low-key summer so far in terms of incoming signings, although Joshua Zirkzee and Leny Yoro have arrived from Bologna and Lille respectively for a combined fee of over £85 million.

More additions are expected, though, with United close to completing a move for Bayern Munich right-back Noussair Mazraoui. They are also targeting a new central midfielder.

They also released defender Raphael Varane and forward Anthony Martial at the end of their contracts, but this is largely the same United squad that contested the 2023/24 season.

One of the players who will hope for a strong start to the campaign is goalkeeper Andre Onana, who hugely impressed fans during the second half of last term but did take time to settle in the Premier League before then.

In an interview with reporters ahead of the Community Shield final, the goalkeeper – who is strong with the ball at his feet – admitted that he would take ‘a lot of risks’ this season.

He added: “I can tell you in advance already. Be prepared, because it’s going to be this season, trust me. I will enjoy it even more when this season starts.

“Because the best team in the world takes risks. Building from the back, recognising things … for me it’s important to recognise those kind of things and makes the best decision for the team.

“I will take a lot of responsibility and I think my back is huge to carry it all, no? I think it’s gonna be nice this season.”

But United legend Scholes expressed his concern over Onana ahead of the new campaign.

Speaking on The Overlap Fan Debate alongside Jamie Carragher, he said: “I still worry about the goalkeeper. The goalkeeper is a big concern for me.

“Even in pre-season, with some of the goals he conceded. I worry to death about him.”

On the rest of the team, Scholes added: “I still think there’s areas of the pitch which are a problem for United.

“The new centre-back has already got injured, Martinez was injured last season, Maguire was injured at the end of the season, Lindelof the same, no Varane this season.”
