Arsenal are keen to sign a prolific striker this summer.
Arsenal are set to reopen negotiations over a huge £60 million transfer that would seriously boost their Premier League title credentials.
Arsenal have been involved in the Premier League title race in each of the last two seasons, but twice they have come up short.
Mikel Arteta’s side pushed Manchester City until the final weeks of both the 2022-23 and 2023-24 campaigns, but both seasons it felt like they were lacking something in the final third to get them over the line.
Club chiefs are plotting how to try and win a first league title since 2004, and it looks like their strategy involves signing a new striker.
According to the Daily Briefing, Arsenal want to re-start talks with Sporting CP over their striker Viktor Gyokeres.
The Gunners were linked to the Sweden international during the second half of last season and earlier this summer, and their bid to sign him could be reignited if Marseille agree to sign Eddie Nketiah.
Arsenal will reportedly table a bid of around £55m – £60m, although Sporting are likely to play hard ball and insist that Gyokeres’ £86m release clause is paid in full.
The 26-year-old was one of the most clinical striker’s in Europe last season, scoring a remarkable 43 goals in 50 games in all competitions for Sporting.
Given his impressive return, it’s no surprise that other European giants including Chelsea and Atletico Madrid are also interested in the striker and could make offers of their own.
Arsenal’s striking department is currently made up of Kai Havertz, Gabriel Jesus and Nketiah. The latter has reportedly agreed personal terms with Roberto De Zerbi’s Marseille, although the French club are reluctant to match Arsenal’s reported asking price of at least £20m.
Havertz impressed during the second half of last season and at Euro 2024 with German, but he is more of a false nine than an out-and-out striker.
Jesus was signed from Man City in 2022 but last season he scored just four goals in 27 league outings.
