Selena Gomez is not here for speculation. The 31-year-old multi-hyphenate made her long-awaited return to music with her new song “Single Soon” on August 25, a break-up anthem that some have speculated could be inspired by a particular event — or particular boyfriend — from Selena Gomez’s own romantic life, which she has now roundly shut down.

Selena Gomez and The Weeknd

On August 28, celebrity blog HollywoodLife’s Instagram page gave a shout out to Gomez’s new song, amplifying the speculation by sharing a photo of the star and her then-partner Abel Tesfaye, best known by his artistic moniker The Weeknd, attending the 2017 Met Gala in New York City.

(Gomez and Tesfaye dated for approximately ten months that year before parting ways amicably.)

“In case you missed it, #SelenaGomez released her newest song, ‘Single Soon’ earlier this week! Her fans believe that it is about her romance with #TheWeeknd. What do you think?” the Instagram caption for HollywoodLife’s post read.

The prompt was undoubtedly intended to cause some reaction among commenters, but nobody expected the Selena Gomez herself to show up and clear the air with as little as four words. “Couldn’t be more false,” Gomez commented on the post, completely obliterating even the thought of such a rumor.

Many fans believed Gomez’s ex inspired the track due to a lyric that closes out the song’s first verse: “I don’t wanna see a tear / And the weekend’s almost here.” The line was interpreted as a double entendre, a subtle reference to her former lover’s stage name.

Per Genius, “Single Soon” was penned by Gomez herself alongside Lisa Scinta, Phil Shaouy, Ross Golan, Ammar Malik, Jacob Kasher, Benny Blanco, and Cashmere Cat, so it’s pretty safe to say the inspiration for the track was very much universal. A young woman singing about being unapologetically single in 2023? Groundbreaking.
