Samuel L. Jackson has a bone to pick with Harrison Ford, which he brought up on The Ellen DeGeneres Show on Monday.
The two actors have a friendly rivalry surrounding who is the highest-grossing actor of all time. Currently, Jackson is in the No. 2 position after being knocked off his throne early last year.
“Harrison is still ahead of me because of [Star Wars: The Force Awakens] last year,” Jackson told DeGeneres. “I think my assistant told me I was maybe 150 million or so behind him, but I got a chance to grab him with either this movie [Kong: Skull Island] or [xXx: Return of Xander Cage] is doing really well in China, so I might catch him soon.”
Since its release in December 2015, The Force Awakens has grossed more than $2 billion worldwide. But while Ford might be enjoying a comfortable lead right now, Jackson is determined to reclaim box office dominance.
“I had that title for about five years,” Jackson said. “Then Harrison made one movie and caught me.”
The 68-year-old film icon seems to be doing everything he can to push himself back into the No. 1 spot. He even admitted that, unlike most actors, he is frequently his own audience member.
“I love watching my movies,” he said. “That’s why I’m here. Back when I was doing theater in New York, I always wanted to see the play I was in with me in it, and that’s impossible. So when I got a chance to do movies, it was like heaven.”
Jackson’s appearance on the show came right after Sunday’s eventful Academy Awards ceremony, hosted by Jimmy Kimmel. As DeGeneres has hosted the show before, she was curious to know how Kimmel’s performance stood up to past shows.
“He’s no Ellen DeGeneres, but he’s alright,” Jackson said diplomatically.
Later in the show, they rounded out the interview by playing a game called “Judy or Jackson,” where DeGeneres showed a quote and she and Jackson had to guess if the speaker was Jackson or his good friend Judge Judy Sheindlin.
