Samuel L. Jackson is giving up acting to become a crime-fighting vigilante — at least according to a monologue he read for charity.
The actor appealed to users of Reddit this week to help him raise $100,000 for the Alzheimer’s Association. The prize? Jackson would read a monologue deemed best by the Reddit community.
On Friday, Jackson posted a video and a message saying more than $130,000 had been raised, and he delivered on his promise. (Technically, Jackson chose the monologue he deemed “the most badass” rather than the one that received the most votes, saying it was too hard to tell which had won.)
“I’m quitting acting and pursuing a life of vigilantism,” Jackson says in the video. “It’s time for me to step out of the limelight and step into the shadows. I’ve been given the gift of an incredibly intimidating voice, and I intend to use it to strike fear into the scum that plagues our streets.”
It goes on from there and, in typical Jackson form, has plenty of F-bombs.
Jackson promised that another monologue will be coming over the weekend. In addition, those donating to the cause are entered into a contest to win a trip to have lunch with Jackson and attend the June 15 Shooting Stars Benefit in the United Kingdom, which will benefit the Alzheimer’s Association.
In April, Jackson appeared at a Seth Rogen-hosted fundraiser, where he told stories about several relatives who had the disease.
“So I have the potential to be one of the people you’re raising money for,” Jackson told the crowd. “It’s a pretty devastating disease … but [those who have it] can also be very funny.”
He went on to talk about his mother and his aunt, both of whom had Alzheimer’s disease, and the hijinks that would ensue when they’d come visit him. The pair loved playing charades, even though they didn’t quite know what they were supposed to be acting out. They also would hide their purses from Jackson’s maid, thinking she was a stranger, and the actor and his family would have to spend hours looking for them.
