A cooler head has prevailed for Patrick Mahomes.

On Tuesday, the Kansas City Chiefs quarterback expressed several regrets regarding his now viral post-game reaction in a new interview.

An emotional Mahomes generated headlines following an expletive-filled rant over a penalty thrown by officials in the fourth quarter of his team’s 20-17 loss to the Buffalo Bills over the weekend.

Mahomes’ sideline meltdown extended to a post-game embrace with Bills quarterback Josh Allen at mid-field. Many fans viewed that moment in particular as unsportsmanlike and out of character for the typically calculated player.

While Mahomes didn’t totally walk back his comments over the controversial late-game call on Chiefs wide receiver Kadarius Toney, he did express regrets over his behavior.

The reigning NFL MVP unpacked his reaction during a regularly scheduled spot on 610 Sports Radio in Kansas City.

“Obviously, you don’t ever want to react that way,” Mahomes told 610 host Carrington Harrison. “I care, man. I love it. I love this game. I love my teammates. I want to go out there, put everything on the line to win. But obviously, can’t do that. Can’t be that way towards officials or really anybody in life,”

Mahomes also acknowledged that his behavior sets an example for millions of football fans watching the game.

“I regret the way I acted towards Josh after the game,” Mahomes said. “Because he had nothing to do with it. I was still hot and emotional, but you can’t do that, man. It’s not a great example for kids watching the game. So, I was more upset about that than me on the sidelines.”

The quarterback will have a little more time for reflection before he speaks with reporters again at the next Chiefs’ press conference on Wednesday.

Mahomes wasn’t alone in his complaints with the officials — head coach Andy Reid was also worked up over the penalty after the game.
