Patrick Mahomes and the Kansas City Chiefs secured a playoff berth and clinched their eighth consecutive AFC West division title in Week 17 by defeating the Cincinnati Bengals.
Despite the celebratory moment, the victory was not without its share of drama, as wide receiver Marquez Valdes-Scantling attributed a dropped pass to the reigning NFL MVP.
The two-time Super Bowl-winning quarterback had a noteworthy performance, completing 21 out of 29 attempts for 245 yards, a passing touchdown, and zero interceptions. However, his connection with Valdes-Scantling faced scrutiny during the game, particularly on a critical third-and-3 play where the wide receiver gestured that the pass was off-target.
The incident prompted a strong reaction from a football fan, illustrating the frustration felt by some followers.
Despite finishing the game with only one reception for three yards, Valdes-Scantling‘s dropped passes have become a recurring issue, echoing a similar occurrence in their Week 11 Monday Night Football game against the Philadelphia Eagles.
“Mahomes might shoot MVS with a shotgun after this game,” declared one fan
“A MVS drop … fantastic. That’s why Mahomes doesn’t throw him the ball,” were the thoughts of another.
It is always someone else’s fault for MVS. You know if Mahomes has moved it six inches to the right then he’s sure he catches it pic.twitter.com/78xomVbqyi

In defense of Valdes-Scantling, fellow wideout Tyreek Hill acknowledged the difficulty of the catch. However, the dropped passes have undeniably impacted Valdes-Scantling‘s statistics, with ten drops this season and a league-leading total of 39 dropped passes for the Chiefs.
With that being said, FOX Sports analyst, Nick Wright gave a more nuanced look at the issue.
“MVS trying to show Mahomes up after that drop because the throw was slightly behind him is more infuriating than ten drops combined,” Wright posted on Twitter.
“Patrick has been covering for the WRs all year, including MVS’ drop against Philly.
“That’s benchable for MVS, in my opinion.”
While the Chiefs can temporarily set aside concerns about dropped passes following their playoff-clinching victory, the issue may resurface in their remaining regular-season game against the Los Angeles Chargers.
As they gear up for the postseason and their Super Bowl title defense, addressing the challenge of dropped passes becomes crucial for Patrick Mahomes and the Chiefs. The outcome of future games may hinge on their ability to resolve this persistent issue and maintain a strong offensive performance in the playoffs.
