Dallas Cowboys placekicker Brandon Aubrey revealed in an interview that his transition from soccer to the NFL was inspired by his wife, Jenn.

Cowboys' Brandon Aubrey credits wife Jenn for fueling NFL dreams

Aubrey, who had previously played for Toronto FC in Major League Soccer, shared the story on The Dan Patrick Show.

According to Aubrey, while watching football with his wife on Sundays, she casually suggested that he could give American football a shot.

Despite initially thinking she was crazy, Aubrey decided to try it out. He grabbed a ball, hit the field, and discovered he had some talent.

Aubrey reflected:

“My soccer journey didn’t conclude the way I envisioned it. The narrative began when my wife and I, as we typically did every Sunday, were watching football. In passing, she casually suggested, ‘Hey, I think you could do that.’ As a former professional athlete in soccer, I initially thought she was joking, given the immense effort required to reach the professional level in my previous sport.”

Encouraged by this, he sought out a local coach and started honing his skills.

Aubrey continued:

“The realization struck me that achieving excellence demands relentless effort, regardless of the field. Intrigued, I grabbed a ball, headed to the field, and tested my abilities. Surprisingly, it seemed like I had some knack for it. I sought out a local coach and dove into the grind.”

During the interview, Aubrey admitted that during his time at Notre Dame, he never considered kicking for the football team.

When asked about when he realized he could kick professionally, Aubrey mentioned that it happened gradually.

The host inquired:
“During your time at Notre Dame, did the idea of kicking for the football team ever cross your mind?”

Brandon replied:

“Not once did it ever cross my mind.”

The host followed up:

“When did you come to the realization that you could pursue professional kicking?”

Brandon reflected:

“It’s hard to pinpoint. The initial outing on the field, sans pressure, sticks, or opponents, yielded some success. I thought, ‘Why not give it a shot?’ With no kids and minimal commitments, I committed my free time to honing this skill. I connected with a coach experienced in guiding high school athletes aiming for Division 1.

He was upfront, acknowledging my potential but emphasizing the long odds of my story. It required a significant investment of hard work, time, and energy. I accepted the challenge, and together with the coach, we embarked on this journey to see how far I could take it.”

Aubrey also confessed that it still feels like a dream and emphasized that he’s taking it day by day, focused on doing his job.

Brandon Aubrey tied the knot with his wife, Jenn, on January 4, 2019.

Aubrey used to play soccer for Bethlehem Steel FC, but they let him go in 2018. Then, in 2022, the Birmingham Stallions chose him to be their kicker in a special draft for a new football league called the USFL.

He started playing professionally on April 16, 2022, with the Stallions. He played with them until July 3, 2023, when they ended his contract. Soon after, on July 6, he joined the Dallas Cowboys.

Aubrey did well in his first game with the Cowboys, making all his kicks in a big win against the New York Giants. In Week 8 against the Los Angeles Rams, he did so well that he got an award for being the best special teams player in the NFC.

Then, in Week 9 against the Philadelphia Eagles, he set a record by making the most consecutive field goals at the start of a career.

And in Week 14 against the Eagles again, he became the first kicker in NFL history to make two long field goals in one game.

Because of all these awesome performances, he got another award for being the best special teams player in the NFC.
