Cowboys linebacker Micah Parsons is already looking forward to his next chance to take down a New York quarterback. And that opportunity will come very soon.
Dallas and the two-time All-Pro accomplished the feat easily in Sunday’s season-opening massacre of the Giants at MetLife Stadium. After the 40-0 prime-time win for the Cowboys, Parsons brought up his upcoming Week 2 home opener against the Jets and their hyped new quarterback
“We’ve got a huge opponent next week with [Aaron] Rodgers and that loaded offense over there,” the third-year standout said. “That’s what we’ve got to focus on now.”
The Cowboys had no problem shutting out quarterback Daniel Jones and the Giants as the Dallas defense bullied its way past the Giants’ offensive line to sack Jones seven times for a loss of 47 yards — 10 of which came off of Parsons’ lone sack of the night.
“I think we’re making a statement which I’ve been trying to make,” Parsons said. “We’re the best defense in the National Football League.”
Parsons accounted for three tackles and two quarterback hits in Dallas’ win, and the Cowboys’ defense succeeded in tiring out the Giants’ offense, keeping it on the field for two defensive touchdowns. Meanwhile, Cowboys quarterback Dak Prescott didn’t need to throw a single touchdown pass for his team to win by a 40-point margin.
The Cowboys grabbed the momentum early when rookie center John Michael Schmitz fumbled a snap that Jones recovered for a loss of nine yards. A play later, the Cowboys blocked a field goal attempt, allowing Noah Igbinoghene to recover the ball and return it for the first Dallas touchdown of the night.
The Cowboys never got comfortable and instead capitalized on sloppy Giants play to continue pulling away. Each drive seemed to further diminish any hope for a Giants comeback, and Parsons says he had no doubt in his mind that his team would dominate Week 1.
“I saw it before anybody,” he said. “I said, ‘I can’t wait to get to New York. I already knew it was coming. Just because when preparation meets execution, I don’t think there’s no one that can beat it. We’ve already felt this. We’ve already been there before. We already knew the standard. We already knew what happened last year.”
Parsons is now looking ahead to the next New York opponent and the four-time MVP quarterback that comes along with it.
“I feel good, and I get to go against the great Aaron Rodgers next week,” he said.
The Jets’ offensive line, which will be on display Monday night, will need to show up big time to protect its quarterback from Parsons and what he believes to be the best defense in the league.
Rodgers will make his regular-season debut as a Jet against the Buffalo Bills on Monday Night Football at MetLife, just 24 hours after the Giants took a beating on that same turf. The Jets will travel to Dallas Week 2 for a 4:25 p.m. kickoff next Sunday.
