Literary experts say that Taylor Swift’s lyrics are “poetic” and Taylor deserves to be considered a true poet.

In The Sunday Times, professor Jonathan Bate – who specializes in the study of writer/playwright William Shakespeare – heaped praise on Taylor Swift. He affirmed that Taylor is not only a top showbiz artist but also has a clear literary sensitivity shown from her first albums.

This professor even considered the female singer as a new generation Shakespeare with poetic lyrics, something that few artists have. In the article titled “Why Taylor Swift is a writer”, the professor pointed out a few points that many audiences agreed with.

“Listening to Taylor’s lyrics, which most of the enthusiastic audience seemed to know by heart, I could once again confirm the thought I had 15 years ago: this is not just an entertainment artist. She’s top-notch, she’s also a true poet,” this professor shared.

According to Jonathan, Taylor Swift’s “literary sensibilities” were first evident in the song Love Story. The song borrows inspiration from the famous play Romeo & Juliet but makes the story less tragic and dark. The professor praised the song as “perfection with a catchy hook, good rhythm and clever use of instruments”.

The music of the singer born in 1989 was also included by the professor in a lecture at Warwick University about how Shakespeare’s plays are changed in a modern context. In addition, he also mentioned Taylor Swift’s great potential in the future.
