Kicking off the conversation, Selena Gomez spoke candidly about her struggles with mental health over the years.

In 2014, Selena Gomez was diagnosed with lupus. Since then, she has participated in various volunteer programs to manage anxiety, panic attacks, and depression. Nine months after completing Lupus treatment, Us Weekly confirms Selena continues to enter mental health treatment.

In April 2020, the Getaway star revealed he had been diagnosed with bipolar disorder. Since then, Selena Gomez has used her platform to raise awareness about mental health, by hosting conversations with experts and shedding light on various issues through her project me.

From 2017 to 2020, Selena Gomez served as an executive producer on the Netflix series 13 Reasons Why, which sparked many discussions about the struggles teens face today .

 

In October 2020, Selena hosted an Instagram livestream with Dr. Vivek Murthy, President Joe Biden’s surgeon, to discuss the loneliness she experienced while being isolated due to COVID-19 .

‘At first I couldn’t cope with it that well, but then I started to get into a place where I just could write. I spend more time with my close friends than ever before, and I’m spending more time with my family now,’ Selena said.

Dr. Murthy explains that Selena Gomez’s story is a great example of why it’s important to share your feelings. ‘If you realize that most people are struggling in some way, you will know there are many approaches. When we serve others, we shift the focus from ourselves to them in the context of positive interactions, and we reaffirm to ourselves that we too have value to the world’.

Selena revealed she went into hiding in August 2016 to deal with the side effects of lupus. ‘As many of you know, about a year ago I revealed that I had lupus, a disease that can affect people in different ways. I discovered that anxiety, panic attacks, and depression can be side effects of lupus.

I want to be proactive and focused on maintaining my health and happiness and have decided that the best way forward is to take some time to rest. Thank you to all the fans for your support. You know how special you are to me, but I need to face this to make sure I’m doing everything I can to be the best version of myself. I know I’m not alone and by sharing this I hope others will be encouraged to deal with their own issues,’ Selena said.

In April 2021, the Lose You to Love Me singer announced a new campaign with the Rare Beauty brand to help support mental health education, empower communities, and encourage financial support for more mental health services than in educational institutions. In an Instagram post about the new initiative, called Mental Health 101, Selena opened up about her own past struggles with depression, explaining that she wanted her experience to remind others to treat face mental health problems that they are not alone.

‘I know how lonely and scary it feels to have to deal with anxiety and depression in my youth on my own. If I had been educated about mental health earlier, taught about my condition at school the way I was taught about other subjects, my journey would have been very different. The world needs to know that mental health matters. It’s just as important as your physical health, and I wish we could all acknowledge that, not just with our words but through our actions,’ Selena said.
