Singer – billionaire Rihanna received the title of national hero at the founding ceremony of the Republic of Barbados, November 30.

Prime Minister Mia Mottley – who presided over the ceremony – awarded Rihanna the title for her contributions to her homeland. The Prime Minister referred to the lyrics of the song Diamond (2012) by Rihanna when saying: “May you shine like a diamond, bringing honor to the nation with your works and actions “. The 33-year-old singer expressed emotion when receiving the title.

According to the Daily Mail, Rihanna is the 11th person and second woman in Barbados’ history to receive the honor after religious leader Sarah Ann Gill – who died in 1866. She is one of two contemporaries to be honored, with cricket legend Garfield Sobers (1998). Sobers was also present at the ceremony, giving her a hug.

In August, Rihanna became a billionaire with a net worth of about $1.4 billion, according to Forbes. Although she is famous for her career as a singer, she mainly makes money through running the beauty brand Fenty Beauty. The singer founded this company in 2017 and currently owns about 50% of the shares. Rihanna’s Savage x Fenty lingerie brand also helped her earn about $270 million. The remaining assets come from salaries and profits from music and film projects.

According to Rihanna, what makes her happy is being able to inspire women and young people from humble beginnings to turn the impossible into possible. “They know how I had a difficult start and how I improved step by step. From there, it gives them hope and promotes their own abilities,” she said.
