Only a star as big as Taylor Swift could get on a stage, announce she’s about to share a “secret” and then have the world go wild when that “secret” is a new album.
The 66th annual Grammy Awards delivered that moment.
While accepting her 13th career Grammy for Best Pop Vocal Album for Midnights, Swift told the audience she had been keeping a secret for two years.
She kept her speech short and said 13 was her lucky number, before going on to say her new album, The Tortured Poets Department, would come out on April 19.
That was her secret.
She promised to post the album cover on social media and did so promptly afterwards.
Swift has been re-recording her catalogue since entertainment tycoon Scooter Braun acquired the rights to her earlier releases.
Swift will continue her Eras tour in Tokyo this week before heading to Australia next week.
When Swift later won Album of the Year for Midnights, she made history becoming the first person to win that award four times.
She had previously tied with Frank Sinatra, Paul Simon and Stevie Wonder (who performed at the ceremony). The treasured trio have all won the award three times each.
Chapman and Combs perform Fast Car
There were cheers from the crowd even before Tracy Chapman opened her mouth. All it took were the first few bars of a familiar tune.
Tracy Chapman performed with Luke Combs at the Grammys.
In 1989 Chapman won Best Pop Performance for the song Fast Car. Fast forward to 2024 and she performed that very song at the Grammys, but she wasn’t alone.
Country star Luke Combs joined the reclusive star on stage, after bringing the classic song back to the charts when he recorded a cover.

For those who grew up listening to Chapman’s version, seeing the two of them delivering their heartwarming performance was a treat for the senses.
And the audience couldn’t get enough of it, with Oprah Winfrey among those who lapped up the moment.
Combs bowed down to Chapman at the end of the performance, with Chapman also taking a bow, but to the crowd.
Combs had earlier stated in a pre-recorded video intro at the Grammys that the original version of Fast Car was his favourite song before he knew what a favourite song was.
Miley Cyrus wins her first Grammy and follows it up with a second
Miley Cyrus had a message for the crowd about why she was performing at the Grammys: “So, I can lay in bed on February 5th and watch a video of myself performing at the Grammys,” she told viewers.
An excited Miley Cyrus accepts her Grammy.
Cyrus won her first-ever Grammy when she took to the stage to accept the award for Best Pop Solo Performance for her track Flowers.
She couldn’t contain her excitement, even during her performance which came later.
“I just won my first Grammy!” she sang, changing a lyric in her song.
Grammys red carpet
“I don’t think that I’ve forgotten anyone,” she said after delivering her thank yous.
“But I might have forgotten underwear.”
Joni Mitchell’s debut Grammy performance
There were a lot of performances. But another stand-out was from 80-year-old Joni Mitchell, who performed at the Grammys for the first time.
Joni Mitchell was joined by Brandi Carlile when she performed at the Grammys.
Mitchell sang Both Sides Now from her 1969 album Clouds.
It was a touching debut performance, 56 years into what has been a groundbreaking career.
It’s been quite the comeback for Mitchell, who suffered a brain aneurysm in 2015.
Her performance drew a standing ovation and there were also a few wet eyes in the room.
Killer Mike arrested after winning three Grammys
Killer Mike must have mixed feelings about this year’s Grammys.
The Atlanta rapper was seen being led away in handcuffs, with police saying it was for a “misdemeanour” charge.
Killer Mike had just won all three Grammys he was nominated for at the pre-ceremony.
Jay-Z throws shade in acceptance speech
Music mogul Jay-Z has people guessing about who he was talking about when he got up on stage to accept the Dr Dre Global Impact award.
“Think about that: The most Grammys. Never won Album of the Year. That doesn’t work,” he said.
That was obviously about wife Beyoncé.
But this?
“Some of you may go home and feel like you been robbed.
“Some of you might be robbed.
“Some of you don’t belong in the category.”
Ouch.
It was the second time the Global Impact award had been handed out, with the inaugural honour going to Dr Dre himself.
