Specifically, economist Eto Mitsumasa, a part-time lecturer at Japan’s Tokyo City University, said that Taylor Swift’s four days of performances in Tokyo last week created an economic impact of more than 34 billion yen ( about 228 million USD).

Ticket sales are estimated at about 5.4 billion yen (equivalent to 36 million USD). Merchandise revenue was 3.4 billion yen (about 23 million USD).

The above combined with spending by out-of-town fans on accommodation, transportation and other services is said to have stimulated the economy by 15.6 billion yen (nearly 105 million USD). . Other ripple effects include extra pay for employees at hotels and restaurants.

Mr. Eto said such high estimates are due to the relatively high ticket prices for performances at Tokyo Dome stadium.

According to Mr. Eto, the actual economic impact may be larger because many fans from abroad also come to watch the singer’s shows.
