Too young to celebrate with champagne – or even carry betting sponsors’ logos on his shirt for that matter – 16-year-old Luke ‘The Nuke’ Littler went off in search of a kebab to mark reaching the third round of the World Darts Championship.

The teenager from Cheshire has taken this tournament by storm, forcing bookmakers to send their odds tumbling on him claim the title in his first-ever appearance at Alexandra Palace.

He has now gone from a 66-1 outsider to a 10-1 contender after his latest victory – not that he could legally step foot in a bookies himself.

Treated to chants of ‘you’ve got school in the morning’, Littler proved that his first-round win over former BDO world champion Christian Kist 3-0 was no fluke.

He followed up that dream debut by defeating UK Open champion Andrew Gilding 3-1 in the second round on Thursday night, showing why Phil ‘The Power’ Taylor has been singing his praises.

Wayne Mardle has also described him as ‘extraordinary’, adding he ‘may be the most naturally talented player I’ve ever seen’.

Littler is now guaranteed at least £25,000, though some are starting to believe he could claim the ultimate £500,000 prize that goes with the Sid Waddell Trophy.

Next he will face Matt Campbell, the 34-year-old Canadian, in the third round where the Ally Pally crowd will be firmly on his side.

‘When I went 2-0 up, I lost all my energy,’ Littler said last night after averaging 92.65 against Gilding with five 180s.

‘When Andrew got the set back, I didn’t want to go 2-2. I was nervous as it is. I don’t know how I got it over the line, but I’ve done it.

‘I said to my manager earlier, “I could win with a 50 average, I’m not bothered”, because I know what Andrew’s pace is like. He was pinging tops, here, there and everywhere. But he did let me in and I took my chances.’

Littler realises his star is rising and his way of measuring his new-found fame has been via his own Instagram. At the start of this tournament, he had 4,000 followers. Last night, he was nearing 20,000.

‘It’s unbelievable that so many people know about me,’ added the boy wonder of Ally Pally.

‘I wanted to come back after Christmas and I’m doing that, no matter what. I’ve overachieved.’
