New York made yet another move to add more depth Thursday

New York may be done making splashy, expensive moves, but that doesn’t mean the club is done adding to the organization. The Yankees have added plenty of talent at the big league level this offseason, but also have made a handful of depth signings.

The Yankees officially made another move Thursday as the club signed former San Diego Padres, Seattle Mariners, and Chicago Cubs catcher Luis Torrens, according to the New York Yankees’ transaction log.

Torrens initially signed with the Yankees as an international free agent in 2012. He made his professional debut in 2013 with the Gulf Coast League Yankees 2 and remained within the organization through the 2016 campaign.

The 27-year-old was selected by the Padres in the 2016 Rule-5 Draft and made his big league debut with San Diego in 2017. Since then, he has bounced around between the big leagues and the minors while spending time with the Mariners and Cubs along with San Diego.

Torrens appeared in just 18 games in the Majors last season and slashed .250/.300/.357 with the Cubs and Mariners. He has appeared in 269 total games at the big league level throughout his career and has clubbed 19 home runs, driven in 79 runs, and slashed .227/.289/.354.

He likely won’t play much of a role with the Yankees in 2024, but it could never hurt to add more depth. New York is likely to have both Jose Trevino and Austin Wells in the big leagues next season, but if injuries pop up, maybe Torrens could get a call-up at some point.
