The New York Yankees aren’t satisfied with their offseason results when it comes to improving the pitching staff because along with targeting Japanese ace Yoshinobu Yamamoto the team reportedly made a real effort to land a star pitcher that was recently available on the trade block.
After finishing fourth in the American League East last season, it was always expected that the Yankees would try to make some moves to improve a roster that underperformed in a major way last season.
And they did exactly that in a blockbuster trade for All-Star outfielder Juan Soto and recently added two-time All-Star pitcher Marcus Stroman on a team-friendly contract.
However, this week SNY MLB insider Andy Martino revealed that “the Yankees wish they had had a better offseason with their pitching.” While they are happy with landing Stroman, their disappointment is apparently due to missing out on Yamamoto and a former Cy Young winner from the National League.

In his report, Martino revealed that the New York Yankees made an effort to land 2021 NL Cy Young winner Corbin Burnes this winter. But his asking price, and the cost for many other players they were interested in during the offseason was just too high for them.
“They did try to get Corbin Burnes and they were disappointed that they didn’t,” Martino said during an appearance on “Baseball Night in New York.” “But I don’t have the trade package that was discussed. I wish I could tell you that.”
“But I do know that the Yankees felt like ‘Woah that is too much’ and the next thing they knew he was an Oriole and they didn’t get too far down the tracks. Unfortunate for the Yankees.”
The MLB insider added that the organization wanted to get a top-line starter and bullpen arm this winter but felt the prices on the free agent and trade market were “crazy.” We will quickly see if being more fiscally careful pays off for them in the 2024 MLB season.
Burnes was traded to the Baltimore Orioles last week in a deal that netted the Milwaukee Brewers two notable prospects from Baltimore’s talented minor league system.
