It sounds like the Pittsburgh Pirates are looking into landing a former New York Yankees All-Star.

Former Yankees slugger Gary Sánchez has bounced around since leaving the club after the 2021 season but thrived in 2023. It wasn’t clear where would land and he had trouble finding a spot, but when he joined the San Diego Padres, everything changed.

Sánchez appeared in 72 games with San Diego and clubbed 19 home runs and drove in 46 runs. The 31-year-old also showed off significantly improved defense and became Blake Snell’s personal catcher and thrived.

It’s unclear where he will land in free agency, but one club that is showing interest is the Pittsburgh Pirates, according to the New York Post’s Jon Heyman.

“The Pirates are among teams considering ex-Yankees catcher Gary Sanchez, who had a terrific year in San Diego and became (Blake Snell’s) personal catcher,” Heyman said.

Sánchez clearly showed that he has plenty of pop left in his bat and can be a solid everyday catcher for a club. He is the top remaining free agent catcher and it wouldn’t be surprising to see him sign soon.

There’s always a chance that he’s waiting for Snell to sign so he could possibly join him, but it’s unclear. Pittsburgh would be an interesting place for him to land where he likely would get plenty of playing time.

The Pirates made some positive strides last season and seem to be on the rise. Landing someone like Sánchez would only help.
