FanGraph’s Steamer projections have Juan Soto joining some exclusive company this season, while he and Aaron Judge could join forces to make New York Yankees history.
The New York Yankees have built a star-studded lineup this offseason, and certain projections have the group on pace to make history.
MLB.com reporter Sarah Langs sifted through some of the most interesting nuggets to come out of FanGraphs’ Steamer projections for the year ahead, creating a list of all the records that could be matched or broken.
Former AL MVP Aaron Judge and recent trade addition Juan Soto earned spots towards the top of Langs’ list, partially because they are towards the top of FanGraphs’ leaderboards.
Soto is projected to lead MLB in Weight Runs Created Plus, which is a measurement of pure hitting production. His 171 wRC+ would mark his sixth season breaking 140 since debuting with the Washington Nationals in 2018.
Per Langs, the only other players to post that many seasons at that level through their age-25 season are Mike Trout, Mickey Mantle, Mel Ott and Ty Cobb. On top of that, the only other Yankees who have ever led the league in wRC+ are Judge, Mantle, Babe Ruth, Alex Rodriguez, Lou Gehrig and Don Mattingly.
Soto is also projected to lead MLB with a 19.4% walk rate, which would be his fifth time exceeding 18.0% in his career. No one else has achieved that more than twice through their age-25 season, let alone five times.
Only six pairs of teammates have finished top-three in WAR since 1972. Only two pairs of Yankees teammates have done so – Charlie Keller and Joe Gordon in 1942, then Gehrig and Ruth seven times from 1926 to 1937.
And considering the Yankees have Giancarlo Stanton, Alex Verdugo, Anthony Rizzo, Gleyber Torres, DJ LeMahieu and Anthony Volpe set to join Soto and Judge in their starting lineup, New York is likely to boast one of the most feared offenses in baseball this coming season.
