Emilia Clarke‘s character goes from a naive frightened girl to the all-powerful Mother of Dragons in Game of Thrones. In Season 5, Daenerys turns into a true Khaleesi after burning her Dothraki captors inside the Temple of the Dosh Khaleen. In the final scenes of the episode titled Book of the Stranger, Clarke’s Daenerys walks out of the burning temple through the raging fire, naked and unburned, and the Dothraki bows down to her.

While appearing on The Graham Norton Show in 2016, the Secret Invasion actress recounted one of her awkward experiences with her parents, watching this episode. Clarke forced her parents to watch Book of the Strangers, as they felt that she was largely absent from the recent episodes. Clarke later regretted that decision, stating, “In hindsight, it might have not been the episode to choose.”

When Graham Norton asked whether her parents left the room or watched the scene, Clarke jokingly replied, “No, we started talking about something really important, like Top Gear.” Clarke recalled the embarrassing story once again to Kelly Ripa on her show Live! with Kelly. She shared that she wanted her parents to watch the moment when her storyline turned exciting.

Clarker further revealed that her parents were trying to get the spoilers out of her, but she made them sit down and watch the show. She revealed that she ended up regretting it as her father asked her after watching her n*de scene, “Again?”. The Me Before You actress shared with Live! with Kelly:

“I said, watch this one. I said, are you guys watching the show tonight? And they were like yeah, maybe, we might just get it on HBO GO or something or whatever. And I said no, watch tonight. Watch that one. And they were trying to get the spoilers out of me and it didn’t work. I ended up sitting them down and being like, ‘Let’s watch it’, and then instantly regretting it. My dad was like, ‘Again?’”

Clarke was right in saying that the episode held significant importance, given that Daenerys Targaryen’s scene was a major element that carried the storyline forward.

Emilia Clarke was 23 when she first started on Game of Thrones and revealed that she was uncomfortable filming n*de in a large set full of people. She shared with Dax Shepard of the Armchair Expert podcast that she approached it as a job nevertheless. She shared that the script clearly needed the scene, and she made sense of it. Clarke told Dax Shepard:

“I took the job and then they sent me the scripts and I was reading them, and I was like, ‘Oh, there’s the catch!’ But I’d come fresh from drama school and I approached it as a job: if it’s in the script then it’s clearly needed. This is what this is and I’m going to make sense of it and that’s what I’m going to do and everything’s going to be cool.”

Clarke added that she had become more “savvy” about filming such scenes since Game of Thrones. She shared that she only chose to do what she was comfortable with. She even revealed a fight on set where she insisted on a sheet staying up during a s*x scene. The makers told her, “You don’t wanna disappoint your Game of Thrones fans,” to which she responded, “F*ck you.”
