While Henry Cavill has recently been rumored to be joining the MCU, he already revealed which Marvel Comics superhero he’d want to portray in the live-action franchise three-years-ago. British actor Henry Cavill began his acting career in small films and television shows, but became internationally known after being cast as Clark Kent, a.k.a. Superman, in the DCEU’s Man of Steel back in 2013. Since then, Cavill has gone from strength to strength, appearing in four further DCEU projects, the Mission: Impossible franchise and Netflix’s The Witcher and Enola Holmes projects, but a role in Marvel Studios’ MCU could be next.
Recently, Henry Cavill has become the subject of speculation surrounding a potential role in the MCU’s Multiverse Saga, as some have theorized he could be cast as the highly-anticipated villain Doctor Doom. This role could see Cavill debut in the MCU’s upcoming The Fantastic Four reboot, but there are several other Marvel characters that Henry Cavill would be perfect for. After being replaced as Superman by David Corenswet in the rebooted DC Universe, Henry Cavill is perhaps free to join the MCU as a powerful new superhero, and he has already revealed exactly which Marvel hero he’d want to portray.
Henry Cavill Wants To Be The MCU’s Captain Britain
Back in 2021, Henry Cavill spoke to The Hollywood Reporter about his career, and the opportunity was taken to ask which role he’d want in the MCU. While stressing the fact that he wouldn’t want to replace a current MCU actor if a role should be recast, Cavill noted that he’d want to take on Brian Braddock’s Captain Britain. This followed early rumors that Cavill would portray the British hero, after Warner Bros. neglected the DCEU’s Superman for several years. Cavill even likened his vision to that of Captain America, delivering a more modern take to the Marvel Comics hero.
I’m never going to say a Marvel character that is already being played by someone else, because everyone’s doing such an amazing job. However, I have the internet and I have seen the various rumors about Captain Britain and that would be loads of fun to do a cool, modernized version of that — like the way they modernized Captain America. There’s something fun about that, and I do love being British.
As Captain Britain, Henry Cavill would get the chance to represent his country of origin as a British superhero, and this would also expand the franchise itself, as Marvel Studios hasn’t spent a great deal of time exploring the heroes of the United Kingdom. After portraying Superman for a decade, Henry Cavill has more than proven that he’d be perfect for the role of Brian Braddock, though this would be a far more human and relatable character than the alien Kal-El. If Cavill is cast as Captain Britain, he could debut prior to the conclusion of the MCU’s Multiverse Saga.
Who Is Captain Britain In The Marvel Comics?
Brian Braddock was introduced to Marvel Comics in 1976’s Captain Britain #1. After the death of his parents, Essex-born Braddock, who had thrown himself into studying physics, took a fellowship at a nuclear facility. After an attack by the Reaver, Braddock tried to find help, but became injured after falling from his bike. The near-dead Braddock was met by Merlyn and Roma, Omniversal protectors, who offered him a chance to become a superhero, offering him either the Amulet of Right or the Sword of Might. Not considering himself a warrior, Braddock chose the Amulet, and was transformed into Captain Britain. As a new superhero, Captain Britain began to develop his own rogues gallery of villains, including the likes of Slaymaster, Vixen and the computer Mastermind. With help from Captain America and Nick Fury, Braddock thwarted a neo-Nazi attempt at conquering the United Kingdom, and fought alongside the Black Knight to defend Otherworld, a.k.a. Avalon. Brian Braddock also became part of a larger superhero team comprising variants of Captain Britain from alternate realities, known as the Captain Britain Corps, with each member protecting their own version of the United Kingdom from mystical threats, and upholding the country’s local laws and values.
How Captain Britain Could Fit Into The MCU Phase 5 & 6
The MCU’s Multiverse Saga would be the perfect place for Marvel Studios to introduce the Captain Britain Corps, which could see Henry Cavill be included as Earth-616’s Captain Britain. This society protects the multiverse and guards the gateways between dimensions, which could see them have a prominent role in Phase 5 or 6. As well as debuting the Captain Britain Corps, however, Brian Braddock’s MCU introduction could also bring his twin sister, Betsy Braddock, into the MCU. Better known as the mutant Psylocke, Betsy Braddock’s debut in the MCU can begin to lay the foundations for the MCU’s X-Men team.
Marvel Studios is developing an X-Men reboot for the MCU, but there has been no sign of any of the team’s official members in the MCU just yet. Brian and Betsy Braddock’s debuts in the Multiverse Saga could change this, as Betsy Braddock’s Psylocke was a prominent member of the X-Men during the 1990s. Both Brian and Betsy were also featured in the United Kingdom’s mutant team Excalibur, so Captain Britain’s introduction to the MCU could expand the world of mutants significantly. Henry Cavill may have the perfect skill-set to spearhead this exciting new chapter in the MCU.
