Chicago and San Francisco both are looking into a rumored Yankees target

The New York Yankees likely aren’t going to make another major splash in free agency.

New York has been one of the most active teams in baseball — both through trades and free agency — this offseason and landed Juan Soto, Alex Verdugo, and Marcus Stroman among other depth moves.

The Yankees have been linked to a handful of players, but the club likely won’t make another big investment as their payroll has ballooned up.

At one point in the offseason, former Toronto Blue Jays third baseman Matt Chapman seemed to be a possible option for New York. It was rumored that the Yankees were looking to improve the third base spot and Chapman was mentioned.

While this is the case, a move didn’t come to fruition and he now likely will be signing elsewhere. Two teams that are viewed as possible landing spots are the Chicago Cubs and San Francisco Giants, according to MLB Network’s Jon Morosi.

“Matt Chapman’s market clarifies further with Justin Turner going to the Blue Jays,” Morosi said. “The Cubs and Giants are among Chapman’s possible landing spots.”

Chapman is one of the top offensive free agents still available and likely will get a large contract. The four-time Gold Glove Award winner is one of the top defensive third basemen in baseball. Plus, he has clubbed 27 or more home runs in three of the last five seasons.

The 30-year-old has started to see some regression offensively but still is a very solid option. Both San Francisco and Chicago have been looking for major upgrades this offseason and it wouldn’t be surprising to see either land Chapman.
