Caitlin Clark’s relationship with Stephanie White speaks volumes
Stephanie White has parted ways with the Connecticut Sun after an impressive season as their head coach with all signs pointing toward a reunion with the Indiana Fever
The Connecticut Sun and head coach Stephanie White parted ways on Monday, coming just one day after the Indiana Fever fired Christie Sides – with many believing the writing is on the wall for a reunion.
White pulled off arguably one of the more impressive seasons in the WNBA in 2024, leading the Sun to a third-ranked finish in the regular season before losing in the semi-finals of the playoffs to the Minnesota Lynx – outperforming what was expected of them prior to the year beginning.
But on Monday, the Sun announced that White was leaving the team after an opening at the Fever, her former team where she has both played and coached – looking set to team up with Caitlin Clark, with the two already seemingly having a good relationship
Clark has been pictured speaking to White on numerous occasions when the Fever and Sun met last season, with the head coach admitting her admiration for the Rookie of the Year.
Prior to the WNBA Draft, White had praised Clark as the best player in the class, stating: “She has gotten better every year, she put on six pounds of muscle from a season ago… and she reads the game.”
And after Clark’s first two games in the league, where she had struggled with some asking questions on whether she would live up to the hype, White had said: “She is going to be fine. It’s two games in, are you kidding me? She’s a student of the game, she got better every year. You’re not just going to absorb all of the new information that’s coming at you in two games, in two weeks.”
White leaving the Sun must suggest that she has another move awaiting, with the Fever position likely to be the favorable option out of the surprisingly many openings in the WNBA.
The Sun’s head coach is the seventh to leave her team this off-season, with the Chicago Sky, Los Angeles Sparks, Atlanta Dream, Washington Mystics, Fever and Wings all looking for new candidates.
The proposition of re-joining the Fever – who look to be in the best position they’ve ever been in with Clark already blossoming into a superstar – will likely be one that White will find tough to turn down. Fans are now waiting to see the first domino fall at the positions around the league.
