Hands off Trevor: SA rallies to defend Noah against ex-girlfriend’s joke theft accusations
Trevor Noah and Jordyn Taylor dated between 2015 and 2018South African TikTokers have joined forces to defend SA-born US-based comedian Trevor Noah. This comes after the former The Daily Show host’s ex-girlfriend, Jordyn Taylor, accused him of stealing comedic material.
Taylor made the allegations during an episode of Netflix’s reality TV show Selling The City.
In the show’s second instalment, Taylor told fellow agent and cast member Abigail Godfrey that Noah would borrow material from her “all the time,” adding that she was “the funny one in the relationship.” Revealing that they had met on X (formerly known as Twitter), Jordyn shared:
“He and I met on Twitter, which is so random. I was here visiting and we met up, but I was so nervous. He’s a celebrity, but at the time, he was a nobody. No one knew who he was.”
Later, in a diary confession, Jordyn Taylor accused Noah of plagiarising comedic material. She said: “Trevor borrowed me for material all the time. But he would also steal my material, a 100%.”
The couple met in 2015 after the 40-year-old comedian officially moved to the US, where Taylor helped him find and purchase his $10 million (R187 million) New York apartment. Their relationship blossomed for a few years before their quiet split in 2018.
Don’t mess with Trev?
Following Taylor’s allegations, which have gone viral on social media app TikTok, hundreds of South Africans have come forward to defend him, grilling the celeb real estate agent/singer.
“Girl, fair warning. We don’t play about our own,” one South African wrote underneath one of Taylor’s TikToks, as another chimed in, “Don’t play with our brother like that.”
Hundreds of others beckoned the 34-year-old to come to South Africa to perform a stand-up comedy show and prove that Noah had stolen her material. One person said, “Hi sisi, please do a one-woman show. We would looooove to hear the material you gave Trevor Noah.”
Taking it on the chin, Taylor responded to the influx of comments from South Africans with, “Yooo, SA! Y’all coming in hot! Ha, I get it!! I love y’all still, though!”
