As Donald Trump sits down with Elon Musk for an ‘interview’ in a culmination of their on-again, off-again friendship, X Spaces has glitches and refused to load for millions, with Musk blaming a ‘DDOS attack’ and claiming the ‘live’ interview will be posted for listeners ‘later

After agreeing to an interview last week, Donald Trump is sitting down with Elon Musk for a wild and ‘unscripted’ talk – except it’s gone from ‘live’ to ‘later’ as millions are complaining that they can’t get into X Spaces.

The interview is currently streaming on Trump’s account, @realDonaldTrump, according to X. Except, when you try to enter ‘spaces,’ it simply fails to load.

The event has already spawned dozens of memes on the platform as Trump fans and haters alike try to tune into this interview between two men who have reputations for saying famously horrific things about the LGBTQ+ community, migrants, children, women, and other such topics frequently brought up in right-wing discourse.

Musk Tweeted at 18 minutes past and blamed the glitch on a ‘DDOS attack,’ saying that he was working on shutting it down.

Yesterday, on his own platform, Elon Musk promised to run ‘scaling tests’ to prevent another debacle, but most Mirror journalists, along with some beloved Republican media types, like Glenn Beck, still can’t access the interview that was supposed to start over forty minutes ago.

A similar debacle happened to Florida Governor Ron DeSantis when he tried to use X’s Spaces feature to launch his presidential campaign. Instead, he faced what we’re all seeing now: nothing.

All that comes up for most is a gray screen that says “Spaces – details not available,” throwing journalists and Trump fans for a loop. For about five minutes, there were sounds of some elevator music coming from Spaces, but that’s stopped now.

Updating on Truth Social last Tuesday, former President Donald Trump thrilled his fandom with the suggestion that he’d be doing an open interview – with none other than tech mogul and renowned right-winger Elon Musk.

“On Monday night, I’ll be doing a major interview with Elon Musk-Details to Follow,” he Trumpeted on his own social media site, which he created when he was temporarily banned from one the world’s biggest communication platforms.

Since commandeering what used to be known as Twitter, Musk has not been coy about his conservative leanings and publicly backing Trump, unlike some of the other owners of similar platforms.

Elon Musk makes waves in Silicon Valley by emphatically supporting Donald Trump, avoiding the trend among tech leaders who usually avoid outright endorsements. Eyebrows went skyward when Musk welcomed Trump back to the influential social media stage after his ban, hinting at a pivot to the right.

His behavior contradicts Meta’s Mark Zuckerberg, who tends to eschew open political allegiance. Musk shows no reticence in expressing his preferences.

As a prelude to their impending chat, Trump reignited his presence on the platform now referred to as X after taking a year-long hiatus, priming for what’s expected to be a fiery encounter with the outspoken billionaire Elon Musk.

Diving back into the digital fray for the first time since August 24 of the previous year, Trump set the internet ablaze with a dramatic campaign-style hint. Charging ahead, he brought forth at least four posts in the succeeding two hours, hyping up his 8 p.m. EDT dialogue with Musk and lobbing barbs at Vice President Kamala Harris, branding her a “SAN FRANCISCO RADICAL.”

His last post on the platform was his Fulton County Jail mugshot from 2023. Two days before that, he announced two days after the Jan. 6, 2021 insurrection that he wouldn’t be attending President Joe Biden’s inauguration.

The chat with Musk, scheduled for 8 pm Eastern Time, is described as an unrestricted, spontaneous conversation that’s sure to captivate: “unscripted with no limits on subject matter, so should be highly entertaining!” Users of X have the chance to submit their questions for the session.

X has been the main stage for some memorable moments in the 2024 political theater. Instead of participating in the initial GOP presidential debate in August, Trump hosted a solo act, appearing on screens with a prerecorded conversation with former Fox News star Tucker Carlson broadcasted on X.

Just last month, President Joe Biden made headlines when he announced his retirement from campaigning with a written statement posted on this very platform.

However, ahead of a planned interview with former U.S. President Donald Trump, the European Union’s digital enforcer warned Musk with a letter reminding him of the “EU’s rules against promoting hate speech.”

Europe’s Digital Commissioner, Thierry Breton, says Musk has a legal obligation to prevent the “amplification of harmful content.” Breton posted on X, stating: “As the relevant content is accessible to EU users and being amplified also in our jurisdiction, we cannot exclude potential spillovers in the EU.”

Breton left a nasty warning for Musk, saying “any negative effect of illegal content” could lead to further legal actions against X. Breton says he’s using “our full toolbox, including by adopting interim measures, should it be warranted to protect EU citizens from harm.”

In July, the EU accused X, which Musk acquired in 2022, of violating its social media laws and the site is now facing potential fines that could run into the millions.

Following the Jan. 6, 2021 riots at the U.S. Capitol, Trump was suspended from X, then known as Twitter, “due to the risk of further incitement of violence,” according to the company. After Musk took over X, he reinstated Trump’s account.

Before his return to Twitter, Trump launched his own platform, Truth Social. However, shares of its parent company, Trump Media and Technology Group, fell by over 5 percent on Monday following the announcement of minimal revenues and a net loss.
