Jordan Chiles is opening up about the moment she placed her Olympic gold medal around the neck of Mariska Hargitay’s daughter, Amaya.

Chiles, 23, loaned Amaya her gold medal, which she earned during the women’s artistic gymnastics team final, while they posed for multiple photos, after Hargitay’s family surprised Chiles and Suni Lee backstage Aug. 2.

As Chiles explained to TODAY.com on Aug. 8, she relates to Amaya and recognizes something of herself in the teen.

“I’ve been in her position before, when it comes to your beauty, the diversity, everything like that,” Chiles says.

“Obviously, for you to walk around and, you know, everybody’s going to ask questions like, ‘Is this really your mom?’ You know, I’ve been there once before,” she continues. “And so I felt like in that moment, it was really cool just to give her that opportunity to feel seen.”

Hargitay and her husband, Peter Hermann, adopted Amaya in April 2011. The couple also share two sons, August, 18, and Andrew, whom they adopted in October 2011.

Chiles has opened up in the past about how people have said hurtful things about her racial background (her father is Black, and her mother is Latina).

“Some lady in the crowd basically was like, ‘She doesn’t deserve to be on the floor. She doesn’t even look like anybody else,’” Chiles told Teen Vogue in July, recalling a time she competed as a child.

“I’ve been told that my mom wasn’t my mom,” she also said. “I’ve gotten told that I wasn’t Black.”

Chiles tells TODAY.com when she saw Amaya that day, she thought, “You know what, she’s gorgeous.”

“It caught my eye,” she adds. “It wasn’t just like, ‘Oh yeah, I’m just doing that for publicity.’ No, it caught my eye and I felt like the beauty is what needs to be seen, and I’m happy I had that moment with her.”

Chiles also says Hargitay is “just the best” and meeting her “felt like I’ve known her for years.”

Hargitay later posted about Chiles’ and Lee’s encounter with her daughter on Instagram.

“Thank you @sunisalee and @jordanchiles for shining your bright, beautiful, Olympian light on my sweetest girl,” she wrote in the caption. “A mountaintop moment.”

Hargitay also commented on a series of Instagram photos shared by USA Gymnastics of the moment Chiles placed her medal around Amaya’s neck.

“I have no words,” she wrote.

The “SVU” star and her family made the most of their time in Paris.

The family of five cheered on swimmer Katie Ledecky along with Ledecky’s family during an event last week, and Hargitay and her three children were spotted in the stands at the women’s artistic gymnastics all-around final Aug. 1.

On Aug. 5, Chiles went on to win her second Olympic medal in Paris, earning bronze in the women’s floor exercise final after a surprise scoring twist. She also holds a silver medal from the postponed 2020 Tokyo Olympics.
