Gina Chiles, the mother of Olympic gold medalist Jordan Chiles, says her daughter is dealing with “racist disgusting comments” from people online.

Jordan, 23, won two more Olympic medals — a bronze in the individual floor exercise and a team gold with Simone Biles, Suni Lee, Jade Carey and Hezly Rivera, to add to her team silver from Tokyo — at the 2024 Paris Games.

On Aug. 9, the gymnast’s mother posted a message about the continued racism she says her daughter is subjected to in a post on X (formerly known as Twitter).

“The racist disgusting comments are still happening in 2024. I’m tired of people who say it no longer exists,” Gina wrote.

“My daughter is a highly decorated Olympian with the biggest heart and a level of sportsmanship that is unmatched…and she’s being called disgusting things.”

Gina didn’t expand on what hateful messages her daughter has received, but the Aug. 9 post wasn’t the first time the mother of five has addressed the digital toxicity.

On Aug. 7, Gina wrote, “Y’all done being vile in these Twitter streets yet?,” on X.

In addition to the racism, sexism and general spite regularly spewed towards athletes and public figures on social media, Jordan has been subjected to an added layer of unfair criticism amid the allegations that she didn’t earn her bronze medal in the floor exercise.

After earning an initial score of 13.666 in the final on Aug. 5, — which would have left her with a fifth place finish — Jordan’s coach Cecile Landi filed an inquiry claiming that Chiles received a lower difficulty score than she should have, specifically pointing to a leap that required the gymnast to perform a split in mid-air while rotating 540 degrees.

The inquiry resulted in a score change that secured Jordan the bronze medal, bumping Romanian gymnast Ana Barbosu to fourth place and off of the podium.

Romania has appealed the decision and the country’s prime minister, Marcel Ciolacu, announced that he will be boycotting the closing ceremony over the “scandalous situation,” per his Facebook.

Landi defended Jordan’s bronze medal to a user who commented on her post that Chiles cheated. “Jordan won this bronze medal and didn’t steal anything from anyone,” Landi wrote in a comment. “I simply did my job and fought for my athlete.”

When Jordan appeared on Good Morning America after winning the bronze, she took a moment to recognize Barbosu. “Ana Barbosu, she’s an amazing athlete, she’s done amazing things within her gymnastics as well,” Jordan said. “I’m very proud of myself but very proud of her as well.”
