Angel Reese had perfect one-letter response to Chicago Sky head coach hire image

Yet another ball has dropped in the WNBA coaching carousel, with the Chicago Sky hiring Las Vegas Aces assistant coach Tyler Marsh as their next head coach, ESPN reported.
At 36 years old, Marsh enters the league as its youngest coach. His hiring comes just a day after Caitlin Clark and the Indiana Fever announced Stephanie White, who recently parted ways with the Connecticut Sun, as their new head coach.

Sky forward (and Clark’s longtime rival) Angel Reese was quick to comment on Marsh’s move to the Midwest, tweeting a simple response: “W.”

She also quipped with Aces player Sydney Colson, who joked the team was grieving the departure of their assistant coach. Reese responded: “Sorry but your time is UP. It’s our turn! I’ll send you some tissue tho sister girl unless you want to come join this side too.”

Aces guard Alysha Clark also chimed in, commenting “Like give us a day. Dang,” on Colson’s tweet, to which Reese responded  with “snatchiesssssss” and “sorry not sorry sis,” paired with a stifled laugh emoji.

Here’s everything to know about the Chicago Sky’s head coach hire.

Who is Tyler Marsh?

Marsh will replace Teresa Weatherspoon, who was fired in late September after the Sky failed to make the playoffs for the first time in five years. He arrives from Sin City, where he served on the Aces coaching staff since Becky Hammon’s arrival at the helm in 2022.

In Marsh’s first two seasons, he helped the Aces to back-to-back titles. He also worked with the NBA’s Pacers as an assistant coach for the same amount of time in the same role. Before that, Marsh was an assistant video coordinator and player development coach for the Raptors after three seasons as a G League assistant.

Marsh played a big role in the growth of Aces guard Jackie Young, who was the WNBA’s most improved player in 2022 before earning a spot on the 2024 gold-medal winning USA Olympic basketball roster and multiple All-Star appearances. This is especially important as the Sky’s starting lineup features two second-year players in Reese and fellow big Kamilla Cardoso.

Why did the Sky fire Teresa Weatherspoon?

After winning the WNBA title in 2021, the Chicago franchise has set a high standard in recent years. But first-year Weatherspoon managed just a 13-27 record with three of the league’s most promising players — Reese, Cardoso and rising star Chennedy Carter.

The Sky finished two games out of the final playoff spot, missing the postseason for the first time since 2018, when the Sky went 13-21 under Amber Stocks. Notably, Stocks was relieved of her duties at the end of that season, welcoming in a half-decade of dominance en route to a championship under James Wade.

Wade left his post in July 2023 to take an assistant position with the Raptors, raising concerns on the perspective of WNBA head coaching roles as lesser than NBA roles of disproportionate titles. The move kickstarted Weatherspoon’s hiring, which segued into the ensuing domino effect that lead to Marsh’s acquisition.
