Man Utd release statement on Mason Greenwood following Marseille transfer (an)

Greenwood has left United on a permanent transfer.

Manchester United have released a statement following Mason Greenwood’s departure from Old Trafford.

Earlier this week United agreed to sell Greenwood to French giants Marseille for a package worth £26.6 million (€30m).

After passing a medical in the south of France, the 22-year-old signed a five-year contract valid until 2029.

Greenwood had not played for United since January 2022; later that month he was arrested and charged with attempted rape, controlling and coercive behaviour and assault occasioning actual bodily harm.

The Crown Prosecution Service dropped the charges just over a year later after key witnesses withdrew their involvement and “new material came to light.”

After conducting their own internal investigation into Greenwood’s conduct, United decided that it was better for both parties if the player continued his career away from Old Trafford.

Greenwood spent last season on loan at Spanish side Getafe, but United did not want to loan him out for a second summer in a row.

On Thursday, United released the following statement:

“Mason Greenwood has left Manchester United and joined French club Olympique de Marseille on a permanent transfer.

“The 22 year-old English forward, who spent last season on loan at Getafe in Spain, made 129 appearances and scored 35 goals for United since making his debut in 2019.

“We wish Mason all the best in his future career.”

Greenwood will wear the number 10 shirt at Marseille.
