Wayne Rooney was on the wrong end of a ‘horrific’ tackle after handing in a transfer request.
Wayne Rooney has revealed he was injured by one of his Manchester United teammates after he handed in a transfer request.
Rooney enjoyed 13 seasons at Man United and became the club’s top scorer in history with an impressive 253 goals to his name.
He won five Premier League titles and the prestigious Champions League, among other major honours.
But he was on the brink of leaving Old Trafford in 2010 when he handed in a transfer request.
Rooney went public as he released a strongly-worded statement, claiming they cannot match his ambitions following the club’s failure to win the league the season before.
He met with David Gill to communicate his decision as he seeked a move away from Man United.
Rooney’s decision didn’t go down well at the club as then-manager Sir Alex Ferguson accused him of showing a lack of respect.
And the former superstar forward even joked that Ferguson told Paul Scholes to injure him, resulting in a ‘horrific’ tackle.
“You wanted to win them games [Friday training matches], some of the tackles which went in were horrific,” he said on The Overlap – brought to up by Sky Bet.

The England legend added: “He [Sir Alex Ferguson] used to stop the game and make us go in. Scholesy [Paul Scholes] put me out the day before a game.
“It was the day the gaffer did his press conference where I wanted to leave, so I’m sure the gaffer had a word with him before training. No, I’m joking.”
Despite handing in a transfer request, Rooney had a change of heart and ultimately remained at Man United, penning a new five-year deal.
But Scholes’ tackle put him out of action for another month as he eventually made his return as a substitute in a 2-0 win over Wigan Athletic on November 20.
