Man Utd fans ask ‘Is that his new shirt number?’ after spotting detail in kit launch

Man Utd unveiled their 2024/25 home kit earlier on Monday.

Manchester United fans think they may have spotted a shirt number hint after the club unveiled their 2024/25 home kit.

United launched their new kit on Monday, featuring Snapdragon as their new front-of-shirt sponsor.

United men’s players Bruno Fernandes and Lisandro Martinez, as well as women’s player Gabby George, featured in the initial kit launch video, with United then posting further details to their official website.

They then posted a second video to TikTok, which showed Rasmus Hojlund, Kobbie Mainoo and Alejandro Garnacho posing in the kit while recreating their iconic celebration photo from last season.

Fans spotted, however, that Garnacho’s shorts had the number six on them. The Argentinian winger, who is currently playing at the Copa America, wears number 17 for United.

You can see the clip below.

One fan wrote: “Garnacho number six next season?”

Another said: “Who else has noticed Garnacho has number six on his shorts.”

And a third simply asked: “Why is Garnacho number six?”

It is worth noting that clubs often use placeholders – not a player’s official number – when producing kit videos, for those who think it is unusual to see the Argentinian with that particular shirt number.

United’s official website still lists Garnacho as wearing the number 17 shirt, meaning it appears likely that he will keep that shirt for next season.

At the beginning of last season, the number seven shirt had been left vacant by the exit of Cristiano Ronaldo, but it was given to Mason Mount once he completed his move from Chelsea.

But if Garnacho did for some reason move across to number six, it wouldn’t be the only unusual player/shirt number combination to have featured in the Premier League.

William Gallas was handed the number 10 shirt upon arrival at Arsenal in 2006 – although Arsene Wenger explained this by stating he didn’t want an attacker to have the pressure of wearing the number given that Dennis Bergkamp had just left.

Chelsea once gave their number nine shirt to Khalid Boulahrouz – a defender – and Steve Sidwell, while striker Wilfried Bony took the number two shirt at Swansea.
