Fans are calling for VAR in Olympics event after claims Team GB were ‘robbed’ of a gold medal

Fans have called for VAR in one Olympic sport after claims that Team GB were robbed of a gold medal.

On Sunday afternoon, the Women’s Skeet event took place in Chateauroux.

For those who are not familiar with the event, skeet is a sport that uses shotguns to break clay targets in the air.

During the event on Sunday, Team GB hopeful Amber Rutter was neck and neck with Chile’s Francisca Crovetto Chadid.

Both athletes finished level on 55 – 55, meaning that a shoot-off was needed to decide the winner of the Olympic gold medal.

During her final attempt, Rutter was adamant that she hit both targets but the judges thought differently as she was awarded one hit and one miss.

That paved the way for Chadid to seal the gold medal as she managed to hit both targets to win.

Replays appeared to show Rutter hitting both targets and reacting on social media, fans expressed their displeasure and demanded VAR to be brought back.

One fan said: “Amber Rutter cheated out of a gold medal. How on earth is there not a VAR equivalent at the Olympics? The biggest sporting event in the world? Unbelievable.”

Another tweeted: “Disgusting they haven’t got VAR for skeet shooting. Amber Rutter clearly hit the target as this replay shows.”

A third fan added: “Amber Rutter that’s gotta hurt!! I can’t believe they scrapped VAR in such a fast sport. Heartbreaking.”

Someone else wrote: “That was an absolute robbery in the women’s skeet! How can a competition as big as the Olympics not have VAR?!? Congratulations nevertheless to Amber Rutter and Francisca Crovetto Chadid for two amazing performances!”

A fifth commented: “Amber Rutter was robbed there. Why didn’t they take VAR to the Olympics? At least have judges with good eyesight then. I’m 1000 miles away and still saw she clipped that. What a shame.”

Another fan said: “No VAR in the shooting! Video replay shows Amber Rutter clearly hit both. Robbed.”
