Cucurella sang a chant about Haaland after Spain won Euro 2024.
Erling Haaland described Marc Cucurella as a “funny man” in his post-match interview after he ignored the Spaniard’s plea for help during Sunday’s game at Stamford Bridge.
Enzo Maresca’s first Premier League game in charge of Chelsea ended in defeat as goals from Haaland and Mateo Kovacic handed reigning champions Manchester City a deserved 2-0 victory.
It was a far-from-eventful clash in all honesty but one moment in the 78th minute got people talking, especially after Cucurella aimed a not-so-subtle dig at Haaland during Spain’s Euro 2024 celebrations.
The Spanish full-back took to the stage in Berlin and was heard singing: “Cucu, Cucurella, he eats paella, Cucu, Cucurella he drinks Estrella, Haaland you’d better tremble as Cucurella is coming.”
In fact, he also belted out the chant in Spain’s hotel on the night of their win over England, as seen in the footage below.
More than a month later and Cucurella needed Haaland’s help after he went down with cramp on Sunday but in a no-nonsense move, the Norwegian striker simply walked past his opponent.
Pedro Neto eventually came to the rescue but fans picked up on Haaland’s decision to ignore the Chelsea full-back.
Here’s how social media reacted to the incident.
One said: “Cucurella got cooked and got a taste of his own medicine,” while another commented: “Best moment of the match in my opinion.”
A third wrote: “Find this hilarious even as a United fan. Fully deserved,” and a fourth said: “Cucurella’s hamstrings are trembling.”
A fifth added: “So he takes Haaland’s shirt last season, and sings a song about him… and now is asking him for help?”
After the full-time whistle, Haaland opened up about Cucurella’s decision to sing his name after Spain came out on top at Euro 2024, describing him as a “funny man” before making an exit.
Speaking to Viaplay Fotball, he said: “Well, Cucurella is a funny man. Last season he asked for my shirt… and this summer he sings a song about me.”
Haaland also took to X, formerly Twitter, after the match. He wrote: “Proud to have played my 100th game for this amazing club and celebrate it with a win and a goal.”
