Erik ten Hag 'ready to move' key player out of Man United, his time at the club is over

Erik ten Hag and new sporting director Dan Ashworth are reportedly keen to move the Man United star.

Erik ten Hag is reportedly to move on a first-team player this summer after staying on at Manchester United.

Despite a disappointing Premier League campaign where United finished in eighth place, the Red Devils beat rivals City in the FA Cup final and the triumph saved Ten Hag’s job.

United elected to stick with the Dutchman and announced they had triggered the option to extend his contract.

With a completely new structure in place under Sir Jim Ratcliffe and INEOS, United are now looking to improve their squad this summer.

The club have made it a priority to bring in a new centre-back this summer, with Jarrad Branthwaite and Matthijs de Ligt both top targets.

Ten Hag is a huge fan of De Ligt and according to The Mirror, sees him as the perfect partner for Lisandro Martinez at the heart of the United backline.

However, even with the departure of Raphael Varane, that will likely push Harry Maguire further down the pecking order and reduce his game-time.

After a mooted move to West Ham fell through last summer, he only made 18 Premier League starts last term.

And as per the report, Maguire’s United career looks “all but over” after calls with both Ten Hag and new sporting director Dan Ashworth.

Ashworth in particular is more than happy to shift Maguire as the 31-year-old only has a year remaining on his deal at Old Trafford.

The club would prefer to receive a transfer fee instead of losing Maguire on a free in 2025.

United have had a bid rejected from Everton for Branthwaite and it was previously suggested that they could use Maguire as a makeweight in a potential deal.

The West Ham ship looks to have sailed after they purchased Wolves captain Max Kilman for £40 million.

Maguire signed for United from Leicester in 2019 and has made 206 appearances for the club.

He was stripped of the captaincy in July 2023.
